KZN, casting spoons from the rocks

Hi Debbie, only saw this now, sorry! There are lots of spinning opportunities at St Lucia and Vidal. The guys have been getting some good snoek at St Lucia on 40g to 60g spoons, cast far out on light braid. There are also garrick and shad around at this time of year, and always the chance of some kingfish action. The best advice I can give is to fish very early mornings and then late afternoon into dark. The water is very clear up there and the game fish prefer low light conditions.

Good advice and i must say very accurate as I caught a stunning 7 kg garrick early morning on a Pink 1 oz Iron candy spoon.

Is this the trap hook Tommo is talking about with the S-bend spoons

Nah Ghost, that's a Circle hook trap hook.
The spoon trap hook is attached to the top pf the spoon, with the proper hook attached at the bottom. It's like an assist hook.

Is it maybe possible to post a photo of an exsample of it. As I understand know is that you put an extra hook on the front splitring of the spoon. Will it not affect the action of the spoon?What size hook must it be then? How do you attached the hook to the splitring, straight on the splitring or not? Sorry for all the questions, I really am a newbie and need to learn alot. Thank you

So here is a pic of a Jigpara Slow pitch spoon/jig. It gives you a general idea of an assist/trap hook. Instead of using Dacron/Kevlar to attach, you just use a split ring.


Instead of 3 hooks, you use just one on either end. The top hook is slightly smaller than the bottom hook.
To be honest, when using small spoons, I personally have never used a trap hook... seems like overkill for me, but Tommo would know better.

If you're using bigger GT Icecreams or Poppers, then Assist hooks on both sides of the lure definitely are an advantage.

I didn't in my wildest dreams think that I might have to unearth this from down under after nn decades. I'm not going to say how many just in case Reefz decides to terminate my membership. I'm still a die-hard Hoyts 11R man but more recently forced to go the WM90 route. On a smaller spoon you don't need the extension on the single. This is my Couta whipping spoon used extensively on Durban's South Pier in the 70s with a KP and a sealy one piece rod.

Gotta move with the times bro! Slow pitch jigging from the side is great fun! Especially for old farts like me. With jigging the spoon up and down, it stays in the water so much longer than ordinary spinning, so less casting and less work for old shoulders...
