Here's a basic guide for servicing reels (what i use ) and various oils and greases for the internals. (1) Tools are varied but this is what works for me as per the photo , the screwdriver is handy as it has multi tips that are stored in the handle, + a normal small screw driver , Special spanner found in the box your reel comes with when purchased, paint brush for cleaning ,set of tweezers for the delicate work ,some earbuds for applying grease / oil , and some specialized dentistry tools for even more specialized work like tiny washer / springs and so on...especially in the spinning reels of today, these tools will do most multipliers and spinning reels

Next up is the lubes and greases, there are a few on the market , i havent listed all of them , but what u can find in your local tackle shop or if after something specific lots of overseas tackle shops stock a wider variety as well. Spanjaard tackle spray works well on spraying on the surface of the reel to disperse moisture and general shining up , does not attack the mono , not sure though on the braid, the Shimano reel grease spray and reel oil spray is pretty handy especially with the thin applicator nozzles to get into tight areas , bearing oils are varied with various properties , ReelX is pretty good + the basic Daiwa reel oil and Eagle Claw reel oil , a lot of anglers make up there own "sauces" of various oils including Rocket fuel and so on , but for normal every day use the oils i've mentioned will work fine , the small container on the right is used to soak the bearings in after rinsing / soaking in Benzine , which is used to clean all reel internals .I use these Flora margirine tubs for cleaning in , 2 of them , one for initial cleaning and one for rinsing .

Finally the greases for the reel internals Surecatch is a good all round grease for gears and drag washers if u can find it , but generally the Kingfisher grease is good as well on gears and drag washers , there are a host of other greases out there Cals .. etc but these work for me at the moment.

Great post, thanks Mike.

After attempting to "service" my spinning reel for about 4 hours (2 years ago) and I had to dump it
eventually. (It was an Okuma reel, I must admit - made to be used only once, I believe now)

My Shimano Slade is in dire need of a service, but this time I will obtain a diagram first.

Thanks Pierre, what i normally do with the diagrams that are supplied with the reel i take to work and enlarge on the copier , so one can actually see the little pieces and how they all go back together... eish spinning reels , best done in a fully tiled , sterile room ... with no furniture... if something goes "twang " its easier to find on the floor..

I can identify with that. My attempt at servicing the reel was whilst camping on the lawn next to
the Umtamvuna River. Various things went "twang".
I now know better.

Where should I take may Shimano to be serviced in Dbn, do you think?
I know most tackle shops do that, but I don't want to qoute tackle shop names on the forum.

Eric , normally rinse the reel off under a fresh water tap , with the drag tightened and then spray it with the Tackle protector and leave to dry after loosening the drag again, i only do a ful strip down and service after a trip , or if the reel jams up i'll strip it down and service it as soon as i get back to the cabin/ camp to see whats wrong.

Quite impressed with this Quantum Sauce... also has a nice spout to get inside bearings...

Also in my box are things to fix rods with on trips. Emergency rod and reel repairs...

Spare bearings, Drag washers, screws etc etc

Spare guides, flip up and rod tip guides, glues, resin, braid wrap, rod cotton wrap etc

By the way... if anyone is importing some of that Reel-x oil in Mike's photo... please let me know. I want some... reckon that's some of the best stuff I've seen. Had an Exceler sieze on me at my last Vidal trip. We sauced it with some Reel-x and it's been going strong until I opened it up last month!! Been on 2 trips since Vidal, 6 months later!!

PH... if you have some time on your hands, then send it up to Jhb. I'll service it for you, do a tutorial on the Slade and then send it back down. Once I have it, it will take a few days to get it stripped and re-assembled, then you can have it back. Obviously if it needs spare parts, then we will need to order them, which will take a lot longer...?

Great post their MIKE.
I have only a very basic service kit for my reels compaired to the photos that you and Tony have posted. All my oils are from the Rocket feul brand and the drag grease is the stock standard one that I got from Kings. Its time for my TN30 A to get a service before I head to the Transkei in two weeks time but I am a bit afraid.
@ PH you must rather send your reel to Tony to have serviced the can be a real pain in the you know where if it starts going whrong.
