PH, That thing looks amazing Well done.
I am no wood expert, but will yellow wood like the water? Normally its only the harder woods that can take it, will it not warp and crack when wet? Dont want to see that beauty being wrecked doe to a bit of water

Let's hope not!! We've had a Yellow Wood salad bowel for about 30yrs only treated with cooking oil and there is
no warping, cracking, etc.
The reel will receive a few coatings of clear epoxy.

Thanks guys.

The reel seems a bit heavy (I will weigh it tonight) and may well end up on the mantle piece :hehe:

Next time I will know better.

To sensure that the reel spins true, I used an old lathe trick and glued the assembly
to the wooden face plate of the lathe with a sheet of paper in between. After the hole was bored and
the reel trimmed to run true again, a knife was inserted between the reel and face plate and with
a light tap with a hammer, the paper split in half.

A very good trick for making split body lures. You can router the internals then glue the 2 halves with paper to do the final shaping. Split to fit the wire form and re-glue without the paper.  (clap)

Good idea, Bennie. I used cold glue - Alcolin.
Before re-glueing, the paper can be sanded off or removed with a moist cloth.
Actually the "paper" I used was "board". The stuff they use for folders, about 3X the thickness of normal paper.

The reel weighs 280 g without the hardware. A similar KP reel (also without the hardware)
 weighs 250g.

To save on weight, I'm thinking of making the support arm from carbon fibre with a 4mm thick
aluminium core for stiffness.

Dankie BJR.
The hard part will be making the swivel and locking mechanism in stainless steel.
Hopefully that will be done by tomorrow.

Ek wonder ons nie Mntunzini moet gaan vir 'n paar dae nie. Ek is af to Donderdag :happ: :happ:

I have'nt had much time to work on this lately but I made a proto-type mounting bracket just to get the size right (It's a bit too big).
It was made from 2.5mm stainless steel with carbon fibre decoration on the outside.
Unfortunately I had a blonde moment and damaged the bearing when trying to remove it from the reel to do final finishing to the wood

The first two pics are of the reel I use to fly my kite, the last one is for dam fishing.
All have got a clutch or break if you like.
