John F's DIY: Billfish flags
« on: February 01, 2011, 05:11:22 PM »
With the current billfish fever and the approaching competitions where several UA teams will be attending, I figured I'd share how I made my own billfish flags. From previous discussion (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,647.0.html), it seems these are available locally but are also quite pricey.

The ones I made, are not fancy, but will do the trick, cost almost nothing and you can make dozens within an hour!

Here's what you need:

- Old t-shirt (preferably white - good for 4 flags!).

- Tube of Dala artliner fabric ink (dark color - www.dala.co.za) - available at any good stationary or kid's shop (I got it from Toys "R" Us). Cost: +/- R15.00

- Scissors

- Marker pen

- Cable ties

- Internet connection and printer

How to do it:

- Cut the sleeves off. Split them longitudinally in half so you end up with 4 pieces;

- Look for an outline of the fish species you want to have a flag of on the internet. Re-size as desired and print it on A4 paper;

- Cut the outline and then put it on top of the flag. Draw the contour with a fine-point marker pen and then fill the whole outline with the artliner fabric ink;

- Fix the drawing by ironing the reverse side of the flag;

- Punch two small cable ties to the extremities of the flag and secure it to your outrigger, radio antenna, etc.!

- You can even write the name of your boat there!

- If you have a forgiving wife, ask her to sew some nice sheaths on the flag and there you have it (If not, pay someone to do it)!

I'd say it's better that flying your underwear!
