Heres a question for all the reel gurus out there. I put carbontex in my torium and suddenly when I tightened the drag turn the handle would go really really stiff then suddenly back to normal for half a turn then tight. Any ideas what I have done wrong that could possibly cause this?

Brad, did you do the Carbontex yourself? You've obviously got the sequence of the washers above the drag stack wrong... are you coming to the social on the 14th? Bring the reel with, we can have a look see...

Good for you. Expierience is the best way to learn. You are lucky, usually expierience only comes a few seconds after you needed it

Does it matter which side is above or underneath on the last 2 Carbontex washers?

Not sure what you mean Chris? The Carbontex washers can be used either way up, it doesn't really matter.

HI Reefs, great post but is the little plate on top of the dog pawl not perhaps the wrong way around? Don't mean to nitpick, reason I ask is that my two Toriums are the other way around.

The way I have it in the tutorial is the way Keith Murison put it in... but I'm sure it doesn't make a big difference either way? It still holds the Dog Pawl in place, which is what it's designed to do?  :dunno:
As long as it doesn't interfere with the Drive Gear. But it makes sense to put in so that the curve conforms with the drive gear's curve...

Great Demo REEFMAN,

I would like to introduce a product called SaltX to you and other members.

SaltX is a solution that you bath you reels in after us, and it actually eats the salt off the reel and gets in the reel in places that only water gets to.

For most of us, washing the reel off with fresh water after a days fishing is the end of the attention for the reels BUT the problem comes when the fresh water actually pushes the salt deeper into the reel and can be harmful.

With SaltX it actually eats the salt and your reels suffer no corrossion at all.....I have used it for the past year and my maintenance is cut right down.......

FYI, its a great product....

Just thought I would share with you guys the source of my toriums woes. The problem was that after tightening up the drag and winding against resistance it would sieze in one spot while rotating the handle. We tried replacing the cup washers cleaning every bearing meticulously to make sure there was no dirt on them I changed out the drive shaft and washers and the problem persisted. The wierd thing is that after servicing it would be fine until tightening up on the drag. Yesterday I took it to All Out Angling and with in 10mins they found the problem. The plastic case for the AR bearing was upside down! This meant that under pressure it would effectively lock up. It is such a tiny mistake with a huge and very frustrating effect

Jeepers Brad... don't know how you managed to put the bearing in upside down?

It's quite difficult to do that... the top of the bearing has notches on it that fit perfectly into the Inner sleeve.

But glad you got it sorted anyway!

I have no idea and being a bit of a noob with reels I always try not to force things because that normally means I have messed up somewhere but this one just slid right in. Fortunately no lasting damage
