Large leaders - use of a thimble
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:14:27 PM »
Once you get past 1mm leaders, it becomes increasingly difficult to tie a decent knot onto a Stopper Ring.

Bending a large diameter nylon is not ideal.

Enter the Thimble - this is used in nylon from 1.2mm upwards. It makes tieing knots in large leaders much easier.

What I have found with thimbles is that they tend to end up cutting my hands in some way or the other. I must confess I used the Stainless steel ones before, but now I have switched to plastic tubes. They work for me.

The plastic one in the pic does seem as if the edges are rounded, so should be safe

Ya I agree with you the metal ones are flippin dangerous. I rather avoid them. Those ones in the pic above are rubbery plastic and are fluorescent too... glow in the dark...

Reefs do you use that for shore angling? I think the glow in the dark might be a problem offshore, with wahoo and couta going for the swivel and biting off expensive konas. But I suppose you get a NON glow variant

the main reason use a thimble is to protect my leader knot onto my stopper ring from being cut by the pressure of the slide when playing or leadering a big fish

These r the ones use

:corrct: I agree. I was using them on my jigs but stopped because I was worried about them being attractive to fish in the depths. I now use tubing. But if someone produced glow-in-the-dark assist cord  w;k
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

You get Boone Tubing for Offshore use , its a long thin Spring thats dipped in plastic to cover the spring , comes in 10cm long and froom 1.2 mm to 2 mm . Can also be used for your stopper ring , although these spring type sleeves are more for a loop knot , that compesses the 'spring' in the tube .
Thimbles are very handy indeed , I stay well clear of the Metal ones ...
If theres a few guys that want a couple I can buy in bulk at a Commercial shop.

I do believe that those are pretty much what Reefs is referring to. Not sure that there is too much difference from manufacturer to manufacturer. Basic principle is to protect your leader from chaffing and fatigue (from bending too sharply) on terminal tackle.
