Line winder ( need some help )
« on: December 09, 2010, 06:35:11 AM »
I am curuntly busy building a line winder. The type that you get at the tackle shop. I have got all the stuff figured out. The only place that I am getting stuck is with the motor. Are their any ideas from you guys out their on what use? I was even thinking about a drill with a speed setting.

Any ideas please big or small.

Sewing Machine motor as you have the advantage of the speed control pedal

Fritz... remember your thread about unwinding a spool in seconds using a drill?

Why don't you just use the reverse as I suggested in that post...?

Reefs I am making one of those machines that you get in the tackle shops. Want to make something that I could mount on my work bench. Believe you me, my method of taking that line of the reel is number one. I dont think that their is anything faster and easier then that.

I must now make something that can put the line back and that will help with the braid.

Maybe you didn't see my post? Let me explain better....
I take the empty spool out the reel, cover the shaft with cloth and insert it into a drill. The spool that has the new line on, use your clamp magodie and insert that into either a vice, or preferably, another clamped drill. Now use the drill in your hand to wind the line on. The drill that has the spool of line clamped in it, runs in reverse, so it puts a perfect amount of tension onto the new line. Perfect for spooling new braid especially, and also new line. It winds it on like a mackine would, (like a new spool of line) much better and straighter and tighter than you could ever do it with a reel.

Hi Fritz

Any Singer or Elna Repair shop will have some old motors with the pedal lying around.

Regards

@Fritz

I'm also thinking of building one for some time now but never have the time to sit and figure out how. Did you finish yours? does it work? can I steal your idea  :hnthnt:

I have a new sewing machine motor lying around that I can use.

No hasle you can use the same idea. The thing does not work!!!

The motor is not strong anough to run the reel with some tention on it. I had it mounted directly to the spool with a "allen key " to turn the reel.
Will have to change it to a small pully on the motor and a larger one to take the allen key. Will take some photo's of it and post in the morning.

If you like send me your number and I will contact you.

Thanks Mate

The sewing machine motor should do the trick with the correct pully setup. I'm sure between the 2 of we can figure somethin out to get a working model. I was thinking of incorporating a level-wind system to make it hands free, but maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.
