Chockka season opens
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:14:53 PM »
Yesterday we went out to check how the chockka boats were doing. The season have just open and there's
about 30 chockka boats mostly from Port st francis
and Port Elisabeth around Port alfred. J-bay and Port Francis were once the Hotspot but it looks like more and more boats come this side

We drop anckor about 50 meters from the one boat.We knew that thers's milions of eggs on the seabed and the squid is defending their nest with everything they have .IF you lower a doily to the bottom they will attack, and it was not long before we had about 50 squid ourself....we descided  to try the heads for Kob but the sharks were also there, attacking the squid from the bottom
A big shoal of kob moved in and we cought about 15 in half an hours time. All between 8 to 9 kilo's
What a day !!
If you dont know where to go this holiday ,Port alfred is the place to be .
River fishing ,beach and deepsea fishing is all here
If you want more info ,Call me

Thight lines!!

I saw what I thought was a chokka boat last night, lights on, sitting pretty shallow. first time I've seen one since I moved in earlier this month.

I thought it was odd seeing a boat that size so shallow, but chokka season explains it...

Hi again deon,

Im collecting my river boat on monday. We've since sold our 16 ft for something smaller to use inshore. Im looking at fishing the river through this december. Maybe we could meet up for a fish sometime this holiday? Im new to the area, and the fishing here is rather different from what I'm used to doing in natal...

Any advice on spots or tactics for the river?

Thanks

BM

Hi BM,
The best time to fish the river is the hour before high.Take a small sliding sinker with at least 1meter trace
with mud or pink prawn.Drift  with your boat from the wreck  to the other corner .Its about 800 meters.try to keep the boat at the shallow banks(lot of grunter there..

At the corner of the wreck (Port alfred side) the water is 8meters deep .You can try live bait (small strepie)for cob and garrick. The other place is 8km upstreem at cob hole but beware of the big crabs (up to 5kg !!!!

Thanks Deon,

Just the sort of info I was after. I've always looked at the wreck area. Nice to know there is potential there! Hopefully I can get some decent time in before the river gets too busy!

Cheers
