Now structure scan is making sense, I was sure that it can do this but until now have not seen proof. I have however seen similar showings in even deeper water on a Furuno Sonar.

Sidescan is a great feature I loved it when humminbird got out with it.

SideScan range setting should be determined by the depth / water column that you are currently in, with a maximum of 100ft (even if you are in 600ft).  So if you are in lets say 40ft, your SS max range should be set to the same - 40ft.  I see Ken was using a SS range of 50 while his DownScan was on 150ft.   (clap)

Could you explain because it does nor make sense to me.

If I am at 40ft range at 40ft ????  Then I will just be watching the water column!!!! Sorry can not understand what you are trying to say, please explain.

Because the echo / return from a fish, especially a tuna is no where near as powerful as that of the sandy / rocky / coral bottom.   And if you are in water deeper than 30ft it is highly unlikely that you would see the sonic shadow.

A bit, but as long as you compensate with the gain wouldn't it be the same ?

Fishton mean that if the water is 40 meter deep you should set you side scan to 40 meters to the side of the boat. the same as the water depth

100% Fedu,

If you were looking for wrecks in shallow water, or if you were using a towfish in deeper water, then the range setting above will be perfect.

But if you were looking for tuna for example then no, water column only.

BUT

In the sounder showing on the left, he has the range at 150 feet. On the right (structure scan) the range is at 50 feet. On the left he clearly has the noise rejection set way too high. Which is why he is getting a poor showing on the left. Should he have had his sounder set up right, he would have seen the bait and the fish. And it too would have "found the big tuna".

Clearly a bias comparison.

If tuna could be found at a depth of 5.4m, and if they had large swim bladders (as these fish clearly do) - then yes, a SideScan range of far more than your current depth would be a great setting.
