Opinions on Assassin Horizon Championship Edition Surf casting rods

Am looking at these rods, are they worth the money, what are peoples opinions on them.


I am looking at the #5 and 6 rods for Edibles

Awesome rods. Much lighter than the previous version Horizon Zero. They can cast and fish beyond their rating. The 5 which is a 4-6oz can cast a 6oz plus a decent sized bait. That’s how I fish this rod coincidentally. 6oz and a mackerel head bait. Rule of thumb is that with a 4-6oz rod as and example, the sweet spot is a 5oz sinker but this rod casts better with a 6oz. I have tested this both on the 5 and the older model HXL which is what this rod replaces.


They are expensive and worth the money but if you are cost conscious then have a look at the new Okuma Mariana. They are brilliant rods with the exact same components as the Assassin but they are around half the price. You won’t regret buying it but if you are an Assassin guy and can afford the 5 and 6 then I would recommend buying the rod but rather buy the 5 and 7. The 7 can cast those baits for the bigger inedibles and the 5 can be used to target all edibles and your smaller ineds. But if you want one rod to target everything then buy the 6. Is is the most all round rod you can get hope to buy. Take one rod to the beach and catch anything.

Cheers! That is great info. i am looking at the #5 but as i will be only buying the one rod, it looks like you are right and the #6 may be the best all rounder.

UPDATE: Ended up buying the Assasin Championship#5, as i will be targeting edibles up to 15kg . have paired it with a Shimano Stella SW14k. it sounds like that would be too big but in fact it has the same body size as the 8k but with more line capacity. it seems to balance very welll IMO.


Will run it with 30lb braid and 80lb braid leader. casting 5 and 6oz leads.


Rod is nice, few things i would change, at this price point they shouldnt use the basic Fuji seat should use the premium version, is only a couple USD more...  would be nice f they used a locking ring too, Fuji makes it for couple bucks too.


Some of the epoxy work is not the greatest , but that is me being very nit picking, most wouldnt notice it.


Overall though it is a lovely rod and hopefully i can do it justice!
