HELP WITH STUCK BEARINGS ON A KP REEL
« on: August 11, 2020, 10:38:42 AM »
Good morning Guys

My dad is 55+ and only uses these KP reels for edible fishing from shore.
He has a 6 inch deluxe KP reel, which handles broke off recently so I decided to give this reel a good service as well (mind me if I sound stupid as I do not know the name of the parts)
I have stripped the reel down and removed most of the internals and sent the reel for new handles and to fix a part of the broken wood lining on the reel (have to give credit to Bills Fishing Tackle- great service and they always give you the best prices).

I have kept the internals and purchased the bearings at the same store which will come when I pick up the reel.
Now this is where I am having a problem.

There are two bearings on the reel which are on the brass shaft.
The first bearing broke and only the inner ring is stuck or seized on the brass shaft.
The second bearing is still intact and spins but the inner ring is also stuck or seized to the brass shaft.

I need to remove these two bearings, how do I do it without damaging the brass shaft.
I do have a mini tool, do I cut if off?

Thank you

Looks like you already damaged the shaft.
I put the shaft in a vice with it just tight enough to catch the rim of the inner ring. put the screw back in the shaft without a washer and tap it out.

Thank you, tkei but why would you say I damaged the shaft? Unfortunately this reel was not bought brand new and paid 150 for it,it does look like someone tried to change the bearings before but unfortunately didn't succeed, father accidentally hooked a bronze whaler and and when he held on the handles broke, so before sending it in I took the outer silver part and opened the reel to service it, when I removed the screw from the front, (there was no washer) that is how the shaft looks, When I pushed the shaft out, one bearing as mentioned was broken and the other is stuck to the brass shaft, Whatever condition it is in, that's how it came. If you only see the part of the shaft that is not in the picture, you will see that the shaft is not in good condition as the threads are damaged.

I am trying on my own to fix this reel for my dad, he does have other KP reels but this one is his fav.

The top of the shaft looks like it's taken a bit of a hammering, but being bronze, it may "deform" back into shape when the inner bearing race is pushed over it, so first try what Tkei suggested and hopefully it will come off. Use a heat gun on the entire shaft and bearing if need be. Before trying to tap the shaft out, cool the shaft with a block of ice (don't cool the bearing).

Failing that, get a miniature cutting disc and shaft for a dremel type of grinder and very carefully cut off the inner bearing race. Bear in mind that you will still need to true up the shaft again in order to be able to put the new bearing on. Lube everything with Corrosion Block before reassembly.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

I actually want to agree with Derash, its wise to replace the whole shaft.
Many tackleshops will stock shafts, you can even try Cisco's Tackle Shack in Queensburugh if it's still operating. Ask Babs.
He gave good service over the years.
