3 Battery Setup
« on: August 04, 2020, 09:04:36 PM »
Hello Gentlemen
I need your assistance. I am trying to redo the electrical on my GameFish 510. I have Mercs 4 stroke 60s setup. I want to run 3 batteries. 2 batteries which will run each engine with kill switches. 3rd battery used has a house battery. I want all my accessories to run of this battery. Tried  to check the net but rather confusing . Can my motors hand a third battery . Anyone with similar setup , please could you assist.
Thank you
Stay Safe

Just make sure you know what you are doing. I was at Suzuki Dbn where a saw a very nice big boat that had burnt out and apparently is was related to a battery switch or charger circuit that failed. I was looking into something similar to what you are suggesting, and decided against it on the basis of a) added complexity b) fire risk c) extra mass.

If you have a 1Kw sounder it may be a good choice? Mine is smaller but I don't recall what size. Have never had issues with battery running low yet.

Unless you are night rated why do you want an extra battery?

I have 3 battery setup on Seacat 565 . 2 x 70 Ah and house battery of 20 Ah. House battery supplies only Fish finder and VHF . This is best for sensitive electronics - MFD won’t reboot when you crank outboards .
If you do wiring properly , nothing to worry.
I have on all 3 batteries - Switches . And on house battery also a fuse.
Moved both outboard batteries inside cabin - one on left one on right . Away from any water , mist and fuel lines.
Have charging relay for house battery connected to the starboard battery. Port battery supplies , live well and all lights.
I had horrific wiring when I bought this boat . Fuel line was lying on top of port battery - crazy . Ripped all out and all new from scratch . But I hold soldering iron for more then 40 years now - and electronics is my proffesion. I even shorten outboard cables to exact right length. No looping cables ( except for transducer cable )  , no insulation tape used . All cables are secured to fiberglass by plastic groved blocks . Only heat shrink used is a glue lined one . Cables all wrapped with plastic coil organizer .

National Luna makes a pretty easy DIY dual battery solenoid setup. Its used far and wide in the 4x4 overlanding rigs. Cost around R2k. I have one on my vehicle and installed one on my rig about 4 month ago. On the boat I went with a flush mount controller panel, looks super sleek if mounted in your consol.

i am running the full blue sea system on my boat.

3 batteries, house battery is a 105Ah deltec. Works a charm.
All my electronics run off the house battery, and i have the live bait pump running of the one motor battery.
