FIRST TIME ON BOAT
« on: October 09, 2019, 10:32:43 AM »
Hey guys

Our company colleagues are going on a fishing trip this Sunday @ the Durban harbor.
This is going to be our first boat trip so we are not planning to go deep but mainly fish close to the sand banks in the harbor.

I am not sure about the other guys but I am going to be catching and releasing.

I know there are Spotted Grunters being caught on sand prawn but is there any other fish that can be caught there?

Can I use a paddle tail and try for game fish?

Not sure whether to carry a light spinning setup.

Thank you

Kingfish, kob, shad and a few others. Grunter is teh most popular.

Dont take a rod greater than 8ft. This with a 3500 size Daiwa will work nicely.

fished there two weeks ago. 8 feet rod with a spinning reel works wonders, mud or cracker prawns did the trick. next to the banks as you launch from Wilson's Walf lots of grunters, some small (lekker fight with a small rod). Not far off from coaling dumper get the odd salmon and rock salmon . Enjoy.

if you fishing around the center bank, you can expect grunter mostly.

Sand gurnards also come out quite often and if you flick small spoons or have livies out you may get lucky with a nice big springer.

Moving further down towards the harbour mouth towards the lower end of the coaling appliances, use a small flick stick with small lures, guys catch plenty smaller kingies down there.

Remember if you are going to be spinning close to the mouth and you pick up a shad, its close season, so be sure to release.

Thank you, I am going with the intention of releasing my fish, Just hoping I catch though.
Going to be carrying two rods a 6 ft and an 8 ft and matching size reels.

Is this tackle okay? I don't want expensive stuff because this is the first time that I am going and I do not want to waste money on stuff I am not going to use.

Also heard that there are a lot of Kob that are coming out, some guys carrying a 11ft rod for these..Should I carry one also or just stick to the above?

Thanks guys

Your equipment is more than adequate, fishing the harbour you use light tackle. The lighter the better.

Also when fishing off a boat, you want smaller light rods. Bigger rods just get in the way.

Stick to the small rods, 6 or 8 feet & a Diawa BG 3000 with 12 to 15 pound nylon is sufficient. Heard this week lots of silver salmon came out.

Good afternoon Guys

We left around 2:00 pm on Sunday, the wind was heavy as well as big swells in the harbor, but around 4:00 pm it died off, fished mostly with cracker as undersized shad was becoming troublesome on sardine.

Two nice Salmon were caught (one by me and another angler) and one Rock-cod.
A lot of smaller Salmon and Tarpon, Slimies, and some mackerel looking fish.
Small spotted grunters only and nothing bigger than 20 cm.
Managed to hook a 40 cm Tarpon on a 6 ft rod using cracker, very feisty fish, did some aerial displays and netted it and let it go.

All fish caught was on cracker and 6 ft rods.

We only kept the two Salmon and Rock-cod

The rest of the fish was released.

Very nice experience, and affordable if booking for the whole family.

Back to shore fishing.
