KZN - Southcoast Waypoints (Shelley Beach & Port Edward)
« on: September 19, 2019, 12:32:20 PM »
Hi guys,

so got myself a Skippers recently and a Jet Ski kitted for offshore angling! So Excited to go try some offshore fishing out this coming December.Only 1 problem is that i have no waypoints for any locations whatsoever. So, if possible, would any of you experiences UA gents be able to provide me with any waypoints useful to troll around near Shelley & Port Edward?I realise this is a touchy subject as noone wants to share these private locations often. But if you are able to share some, it would be great!

I also may venture up to Amanzimtoti and Sodwana during December and maybe to Ponta Do Ouro possibly, so if anyone has any of these, i would REALLY appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide me.
I have a Lowrance Hook4. So need the SVR file to upload onto the mem card.

Thank you so much in advance if you are able to assist me!

Hi Calligeros
Congrats on getting your skippers ticket and getting into the offshore fishing scene.
I can help you with Shelly Beach. The time of year you are coming is very much the summer gamefish season. Most of the fishing involves trolling for dorado and tuna during this time. Your best bet is to launch out of Shelly Beach and head north to the Umzimkulu river mouth. Here you can troll small konas and a shallow running halco / rapala along the edge of the colour line. You work north and south and catch dorado and small tuna. Also a chance of a sailie. The colour line forms anywhere between 25m depth out to 50m depth depending on rainfall. This is very productive and fun for a morning session. It also falls inside the controlled zone of the new MPA so you can comfortably fish that style there.
Your next best option will be to go into the MPA and fish in the Pelagic Controlled Zone (pelagics only) which is situated on Protea Banks. You will be at the limit of your category D rating but can pull lures from Protea Northern Pinnacle to Protea Southern Pinnacle for a variety of gamefish including tuna, wahoo and dorado. Best lures are a small pink/white kona and a deep diving halco or rapala. There are a lot of sharks. Please do not bottom fish in this area as it is restricted.

Here is an overview of the Protea MPA, and a pic of what the colour line typically looks like. Good luck and post a report!!

If you troll around on this site you will find a section which has a number of posts with waypoints in it. Knock yourself out.
Cool that you have your skippers now as well. Be careful always and venture not far on your own, specially around lower South Coast  .
It can get very testy out there very quickly.

For sure, will just stay near the backline. On a small vessel like this, unless conditions are wonderful its not worth it to jump up and down.
