So , this is a discussion , that often come up , when the guys are talking tackle and rigs .

There are many many ways , to rig them circles , single j hooks , double hook setups . Trebles ect ect .

Finding mullet in the surf .

Itís often , a very easy , when condisions are right .

Whatís the right conditions , mainly in Overberg , we need a good South easterly , SSE are as good as the true SE wind , itís needs to push nice and strong for at least 2 days ....

After these two consective days , you will see the water colour have changed . There will be what Guys , would call pea soup water , or like we call it chocolate water , Basicly any dirty water , with small plooms of sand thatís gets washed around , on the sand in the water , if the waves are dumping and kicking up large areas of sand , this is not conducive to. Fishing , but a few plooms of sand , that works a bit is 100 .

So condisions are right , you have found , the chocolate water , now your net .
These plaat mullet knows nets , so be warned , if your 6í6 and like wearing luminous jackets , it might be a good idea , to change into a more neutral colour , for the sake of your sanity ...

You have , and I canít stress this enough , stalk them , otherwise  , they will just disappear , and surface , a bit further out of your reach , you will need a net , with lead weights , we all use a 6 ft net , some guys go bigger and a few go smaller . The lead weights , helps your net to sink quicker , and close quicker .
Get your net ready , and walk towards the surf , keep an eye out , itís not strange to see them from a distance , but then they are very weary ...
you want to come in behind them , they must Basicly , ideally come past you , then you throw the net . My best advice on throwing net , is to throw the net up onto the air , donít try to throw it in a arch , to open it . The net opens manually when thrown into the air and your holding points are correct .

Some times you will have to swim onto a bank , to reach them .
Some times you will bearly get your feet wet , so no rule of thumb , just keep on working the brown water .
When t seas are upset , and the current are strong , it often happens here , to the point where it becomes in fishable .
Then the mullet , will move fast , and you will have to wait , nd keep an eye , for the shoals to come past , this might take a few times to master it .

Bear in mind these mullet are not only feeding , they are moving in very oxygenated water , they lively guys ...
Size of your livebait , leave these small , fingerling mullet , they die and are just a waste really , youíll need ones from 20 cm and up , itís not unusual for us to throw the larges we can find , some times we slide them too .

To be continued , with pics .

I have often heard guys saying to look for the green foam in the surf, and cast there with the net.
Well I have looked, and looked, but for the life of me I cannot see green foam.

Secondly
I know its been discussed a lot, but have we reached any conclusion whether cast net in an estuary is allowed?

I will not call it green water , but you will not find them in the surf in Gin clear water , thatís for sure .
The colour , or Ď dirty water Ď the inshore winds cause upswellings , this is caused in our area , and in Cape Town , even further up coast too . You will only find the colour in the surf once the wind has blown for SE for a day or two , sometimes the colour come so quiker that two days , mostly , the wind will dictate when the colour are coming , the stronger the better , their quiker . Itís just a  fact , these condisions , are not pleasant most of the times . But itís worth it .

If the wind dies down , the fish come on the bite , and you can expect fireworks
The second day after the strong wind , agoing on  my fishing log the p ast 5 yeaars , are the better day of the two , I always believed in the firsts day . You canít not face the facts . Not to say you donít catch kobs on the firsts day after the EAsterly ,

If and when the wind swings , NW then you can expect , a personal best KOB ,

Great info Lenny.  (clap) I have done my fair share of chasing Mullet with a net there, it is not as easy as it looks. They somehow know exactly how far you can reach and stay just beyond that point.  :hehe:

, so next up.  Keeping your livebait alive, and looking after them.  Tricks and gimicks ect.

Thereís many ways , some work better than other . One thing I can of the bat , point out are , round containers works better than square containers , when transporting livenbaits .

Reason being , the roundness of a bucket or cylinder type container , they donít bump their nose on the sides , when you hit a speed bump or pothole at 55 km per hour , lol .

Youíll need an aerator , a number of brands available , non of them last very long . If you can find a penguin pump ( itís a blue pump from FONK KONG , dirt cheap . Those last longer , and pump much better and stronger , also a fraction othe the others .
If you plan to fish from a boat of harbour wall , a 25 l bucket with lid , dill a couple of holes and attach a rope .. will post a pic.
If you want to travel distances , you might need to have a look at a proper biodegradable pump setup , those pumps from boat shops , lil mods makes a very nice one than can run from your 12 v socket in most cars theses days .

I dont know how to cost a net (even after several training) so end up using Sabiki Rig to catch the mullet for live bait on surf beach.

I use a variation on this..but there are loads of youtube videos on throwing a net, watch a few, get a net not too big, 6ft is perfect and practice on a lawn for half and hour and you will get it..Sometimes the mullet are such a PITA to net though, I've tried sabikis on them but never caught one..white bread or sardine or mackerel and a tiny little hook and float and you are in business. Nice thread Lenny..
Remember guys take care of breeding stock..I want our cob to get back to being like angola's stock.. pipedreams but hey..

No wonder I can't cast the net coz am using a 10ft net, too big for practice.  Will try for a smaller version and thanks for the YouTube tutorial .

Ja Jeepers a 10ft net is not easy to throw. Takes years of practice.

I have seen guys throwing an 8 ft locally . If you are waist  deep in the surf ,not an easy thing to get right .

From the side or harbour , you wil open it , donít know how hardcore you must gooi it ...

Simple math , reveals to me that an 8 ft net will have at least 1/4 more weights than the 6 ft ...

On storage for your net .

Never hang the net up , never put stain on the net , other than normal use .

Some guys stores the net in , water .
Some guys stores their net with diluted fabric softener .

Itís not important , that your net needs to be bone dry before storage .
