FLW South Africa National Champiinship
« on: August 22, 2019, 10:51:56 am »
It's been so long since I was active here that it feels like I should've perhaps posted this in the Welcome New Members section

No excuses!!! But,

After a year or two just fishing the odd comp here and there under various trail flags we decided to take part in the FLW Cast 4 Cash season under MP to assist with the revival of the region. This started in September 2018.

Things went the usual way with a good finish here and there and all the while new lures were researched, designed and made. Many of the venues are far and practise wasn't always possible but we went and gave it our all. Learned a lot even at my tender age of 51 and just this week learned new things yet again.

It was an awesome year and season and we finished it off with a win on the last comp and taking biggest fish (3.275) on a dam we never heard of before called Vygeboom around Badplaas. What a stunning venue and the weekend was the best of the season and not because we won on the second day, but it was just a rocking weekend!!!

Long story short, we managed to get and win the second day comp with fish caught on our own Custom lures, swimjigs, ned-rigs and plastics and it felt Great! We had a very close and tough battle for "Top of the Log" with very worthy opponents (Team Rage) and at the start of the weekend (2 comps over 2 days) we were 2 points behind. Their first day was a blank and that gave us a lead, however there was still another comp the following day and we had to fish our hearts out, and we did. Its with gratitude and humbleness that I can say we finished Top of the Log for FLW MP for 2018/2019 season.

The FLW South Africa National Championships will be held at Witbank dam from the 29th to the 31st of August, next week Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the Final weigh in to held at the Ridge Casino in what is said is going to be like the Bassmaster events in the USA. FLW (the US People) will also be in attendance and it looks like its going to be something huge!!! We are honoured to be part of this.

The first two placed teams at the end of the final will be flown to and accommodated in America, who will then take part in comps on the COSTA series along with a member from one of the other four International countries that was awarded FLW membership. Boats will be supplied by the host country! Its going to be awesome for whomever gets to go. This will be the second time South Africa will be taking part in this setup. If the team members (fishing as individuals) qualify during the Costa Series, they get a spot in the Forrest Wood Cup which is the largest completion of its kind in the world.

Why am I posting this here, well every comp we fished id did so in my UA Lounge shirts and there's a couple of top 5 finishes where I'm proudly displaying it, don't look at my face otherwise your might get a serious fright.

That said, we are fishing for the time of our lives for the first time. We are also fishing against the top of the log contestants from the other FLW C4C regions for Angler of the Year award!

I just had to mention this as I will again be wearing my UA apparel and hoping that we can lift the trophy very proudly wearing it!!!

Guys, let me beg for forgiveness that I haven't been as active of late but we've had lots to deal with, and I'm not talking about fishing and we are still busy dealing with some serious things even now as were preparing for next week. I will try and keep you posted on how it goes but cannot promise that it will be possible as it seems like a very hectic schedule for the three days of tough fishing amongst 60 other boats!

Feels good to have posted something again, patched the holes in my soul!!!!
When I die, will somebody please dress up as the Grim Reaper and attend, don't need to do or say anything, just stand there!

Excellent mate... Congrats. It's awesome just catching a fish on your own creation, let alone winning a comp. Keep it up and keep us posted. Go man go!
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Thanx Guys really appreciate the support and well wishes

Just a few days to go now and my nerves are shot! This is such a huge “Event” not only for South Africa (its the first time FLW America will be here) but for me personally and the Baits I make.

I’m constantly told to relax and to just go and enjoy it that’s difficult when I can’t even eat or sleep properly and that’s been a couple of weeks now duh

Know one thing, we will give it our ALL and hopefully that is what it takes to Win it!

Will try and keep an update as it goes.

PS: Those members from the old forum that still remember Hugo and JohanVC, well they’ll be there too, so there might even be a small “old forum” reunion.

So it 23:00 on the eve before we leave, all the prep is done, redone and rechecked and redone yet again, just to be absolutely sure I haven’t missed something.

Registration is @16:00 and then it’s pre-tournament “captains meeting” where we’ll probably hear all the still unknowns like starting order etc etc.

Here’s to hoping I can stand on stage with my boat partner wearing my UA lounge shirt and lift the trophy’s for AOY and for  :1t:

Gonna be awesome and epic!

Wanted to post this earlier,  ut virtually flew out the day after the comp and if I tell where I am at current, you’ll understand, Zambia. Been hectic the last couple of days and almost ended up in a very bad situation on Wednesday, thankfully the walls and gate to the Embassy held up. We were attacked by a mob of around 3000, burning stuff and throwing stones!

Thank God no one was injured.

Anyhow, back to serious business. We fished our hearts out but with winds in excess of 30km/h it was no easy task. No excuses, we just couldn’t get bigger fish, funny thing was we used what most guys used and still just couldn’t manage it, were at different places and our game plan didn’t quite work out.

That said some of the Huge Names (Legends) in bass fishing also seemed to suffer from the same dilemma. As as usual out of nowhere some team that isn’t that well known goes and knocks the ball out the park. A team from NW won and will be going to the states in November, a trip worth R125k, So a HUGE congrats to them and best wishes and best of luck to them, we are with them in spirit and thought and hope they can show the yanks how we do it this side of the big blue,

That said, I’m flying back home tomorrow and cannot wait to get back on the water for the first pre-fish for the new season, that starts at the end of the month at the same dam (Witbank) where the Final was held. That said, the fishing won’t be the same as I saw some rain forecasted for today over there, so perhaps the fish will finally go into spawn and onto the nests, my biggest struggle every year. I struggle my old ass off to get them to bite when they’re on the nests.

Guys that have asked regarding the lures, I promise I will get to it in this week coming and get back to you. All the Final excitement is over now and this horrid trip is also coming to an end, so it’s business as usual back home in the weasel worx!
