Melkbosstrand Trekkers
« on: August 13, 2019, 11:18:17 pm »
Hey everyone,

I threw a line last week in Melkbos and got to chatting to another fisherman and he mentioned that there are trekkers in Melkbos.

Does anyone know if this is accurate? I haven't seen them there but he says they still active.

They've been around for a while and have the necessary permits and permissions.

They target mostly haarders. (said with tongue in cheek)

There have been some posts on other forums where there was complaints lodged about their modus operandi.

As far as I know per the regulations, there are only trek net licences given out for haarder aside for the sardine netters up north ?!I stand to be corrected..

Have trekker netters ever adhered to the conditions of their permits?
WE are limited to 4 elf as R&S...

Not so for them in False Bay....considered a by catch and trekked in abundance...Seen it with no DAFF officials to monitor the treks

Elf is no sale species so they must let them go and if they net a shoal they have to open the net, as far as I know..

Elf is a no sale species in KZN only, can be commercially targeted by linefishers elsewhere.

West coast treks have license for harder only.I think one has for st joseph

False Bay treks have the same fishing right/quota as linefish boats, so elf is legal.
