Petrol/2stroke mixing ratio.
« on: June 05, 2019, 08:55:43 pm »
Newbie asking. I have 2 x Yamaha 40, 3 cylinder, 2 stroke engines. I bought them with the autolube units disconnected. The guy who I bought them from told me he used to mixed his petrol / 2stroke 50 to 1 but he was not sure if this ratio was correct. Is 50/1 correct? I see on google some outboards ratio is 100/1.

My old Yammy 55 has a 100 to 1 ratio sticker on it - but I run it 50:1 and not had an issue in the last 10 years.

I have owned quite a few two strokes in my life, and have never had issues with 50: 1 ratios. Google it and see what the manufacturers say.

Having been autolube, I think it's way safer to default to 50:1. The 100:1 models specifically state that on the motor but even so, no motor ever suffered damage from more lube. The only possible issues you could have would be fouling of plugs and not being able to see through a cloud of blue smoke while trying to catch fish... but it's definitely safer to err toward more oil rather than less.
