Please indulge this thread for a bit ...let me explain …
I come from a strong aviation background and still fly and own my own aircraft ……..
Recently I bought a "deep sea" boat , but I am not new to boating , I started deep sea fishing almost 40 years ago in Port Elizabeth with a small Roski hull with two 15hp motors on the back , my "formal" training was in the navy , was a coxswain on a Naval Namakura during the 80's . The fact that I am still alive is pure luck as the folly and stupidity of youth did not manage to kill me.....
The reason I write this is I would like to start an "incidents" thread … where incidents are analysed and taken apart through fact and also speculation , the Skipper is ridiculed and hammered , but all in the process of learning so we may all learn. On the Aviation forum that I am on ….(AVCOM) there is such a thread which takes incidents to pieces and sometimes the pilots suffer too, but grimace and bear the discussion... often these discussions start without fact but ultimately we learn.. especially when the pilot gives us his rendition of the facts and circumstances.
December saw a number of boating problems at Sodwana, just last week another boat flipped at Sodwana …I saw the pics but nowhere can I find out why ….yes it was because the surf was up … what made the skipper go in the first place, did he just gun into the oncoming surf, did his motors quit, did he hit rocks, was there a medical condition, was he over loaded , if his motors quit then why did they quit …….. question questions question …..
All the aviation incidents that are commented on I read and try and learn.... even I have been on the receiving end on that forum …...but I learnt from it ….. I would sincerely like to do the same with boating....
