BG 4000 reel
« on: December 24, 2018, 06:51:27 PM »
Hello everyone, i am new here and also first time fishing.
I bough a Barros stout wizzard 3 meters and BG 4000 reel, on which i need help.
I have seen some posts and some say i need to grease up the reel before using it first time, other people say it is not necessary.

I am afraid saltwater ruins it even with regular cleaning, what do you suggest? Should i grease the reel and if so which parts require more attention?

Thanks and cheers from Portugal :D

Hello and thank you!!

I do have a question if you guys dont mind to help, about the reel lube i have seen several oils and my doubt is if the ones with less viscosity (thinner)  are the ideal for the reel.

Welcome to the forum!

With regards to what parts require more attention, I have found the anti reverse bearings are very susceptible to corrosion if the reel is dunked or has been exposed to a lot of saltwater. Some reels are more prone to it than others but that's the first thing I'd keep an eye on.

With regards to what oil to use. Because it's a spinning reel, it's better to use thicker oil or grease for the bearings and grease for the gears, whereas a conventional/multiplying reel will benefit from thin oil on the spool bearings because it helps with the spool spinning longer and therefore helps get distance on a cast, but there isn't really an advantage to thin oil for spinning reels so stick to thicker oil or grease, however don't use thick oil for the anti reverse bearing (my experience at least). The thicker oil on the anti reverse bearing can cause it to become sluggish and then slip

When you say to oild the bearings you mean the race way where the balls run? If so i work in a bearing factory and can get my hands on the oils they use. Just do not know if they are the best for reels.

Yes you oil the balls that run on the races. With regards to oil, I'd use something specifically made for reels like Penn Oil or Diawa Oil, but if the oil you use in the bearing factory is of good quality and the right viscosity, then I'm sure it would be fine to use that

In spinning reels you need to GREASE the bearings. Especially the Daiwa BG, which has no real waterproofing. Like so...

The Anti-reverse bearing needs one drop of any decent oil spread over it to protect it from corrosion. DO NOT use grease on the ARBearing, it will fail.

Cred Tony! Thanks for this!! I had resigned a reel to the junk pile but pulled it out last night and cleaned the ar bearing

Sweeeeet!
Seen lot's of reels with grease in the AR bearing, which then slips and scrambles/rearranges the knuckles...  :hehe:
