SEACAT 565 vs Yogi cat 16
« on: November 05, 2018, 03:10:21 PM »
Hi there,

I am in the market for a new boat. We fish dams 90% of the time and then maybe once or twice a year at the sea. I have 2 boats, although vastly different I would like to get some feedback of others experiences with them.

Boats:

2007 Seacat 565 with 2 x 80 4 stroke Yammies
2008 Yogi cat 16 with 2 x 50 4 stroke Suzuki's

My heart is with the Seacat however my concern is the size of the boat and weight (800kg) - towing wise? Any feedback in this department would be highly appreciated!
What will be a good price for this rig as above (for both)?
The Seacat needs new battery cables at the current ones are corroded, and some cosmetic repairs on the gel coat on the Transom. The trailer will also need to TLC with rust on the drums, winch etc. Their is also a small gel coat crack on the bottom where they nicked a rock when beach launched. The Transom at the back was strengthen by Yamaha Pta with a 12mm stainless steel plate as it had some minor gelcoat cracks due to beach launching - is this common? Besides this boat is full rigged with outriggers, fighting chairs, proper fish finder, T Top and the other bells and whistles.

The Yogi cat, built by Natal Powerboats is similar in size than my previous Kozi 16, however the beam is 500mm wider - hence why I sold the Kozi 16 - more angling/moving space for more anglers. The Yogi had a very good review: http://www.anglerpublications.co.za/boat-tests/2017/12/yogi-cat-500-by-kzn-boats/ . Any hands on experience on one of these from anyone? Things to look out for? The boat is in very good general condition with new flotext carpets, fish finders etc.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated to make the final decisions.

Very quickly:

1. Forget the review by ski-boat mag.... all their reviews are the same! Get info from real anglers...

2. Make sure the cracks are really cosmetic and superficial and not structural. The Seacat is generally a great boat. Take a reputable surveyor to look into the boat.

3. In this segment 19 ft x 16 ft is a HUGE difference.

Thanks - I fully understand that.

My biggest reason for selling my Kozi 16 was to upgrade for space. Although 2 feet sounds like nothing, climbing on the boat it is a huge difference same for a 500mm+ wider beam.

My heart is with the Seacat however I am concerned about the weight and towing the boat. How popular is the 565 and what should a rig like this cost?

The Yogi again as mentioned has the same beam size as the 565 however there is little to now info about them besides that review, hence why I am hoping there are other owners here that can comment.

Seacat 565 is way bigger in the space to fish department, and is very popular as it is easy to tow and very popular for resale!

Not saying the other one is bad, but bigger is better in this case!

Also with it being a Yamaha Boat your backup will be much better. The factory is still producing new boats and you can get service from them should you need.

Cosmetics gets fixed very easily!!!

Transom is made of Cusaboard ( not sure of the spelling) and is very strong on those models!

Good luck with the choice!!!

i think those yammie 80 fourstrokes are the old carborated ones?
Chat to ryan at Durban Yamaha for a trade in price.
Replacement value of a new 565 is about R700k.

I would take the seacat over the yogi cat anyday of the week.

Very capable tow vehicle but sadly the tow rating is either 1500kgs or 2000kgs depending on model.

So mostly in dams at altitude, once, maybe twice year to the coast. Seacat is a good hull no worries - but it seems to have been well used. Motors are older models and not that popular. Issues with the trailer. Some cosmetic issues.

If you where at the coast using it once a month, not even close. Go for the 565.

In your situation it will cost you more to buy, more to fix, more to run and you will use less than 50% of its capabilities.

The Yogi is newer, good motors and is the logical choice.

I have the 565 Seacat, with 100 Yammies on, gets towed by either my Toyota Landcruiser pick-up or by the Disco 4.........no issues re towing. Boat may be heavy, however, I think if sanity prevails whilst towing there should not be any issues. Can't comment on the other make, however, not considering myself a pro on different boats (besides going fishing on mates boats) I am extremely happy with the Seacat and its performance.
