Boat trailer wheels

Hi, Well ass warned and anticipated. I did loose bearings on my Sailfish 176. I'm in the process of rebuilding. Got a new shaft 2.5 tons. New blade springs. New mud Guards. Now the only concern is the wheels and tyres. The trailer currently has the 14" 10J wheels. I'm thinking of upgrading these as well,  With the current wheels being so thin I struggle on the beach. I don't want to go way oversize and don't want to spend an arm and a leg every time replacement is needed.

Any suggestions on rims.

Then the tyres. I've been so fortunate to see it all. Thread separation, Pothole, Break lock and the list go's on. The sad part is that with every replacement tyre I neede to get what is available. At this stage I need a tire that will last.

Any suggestions on this.

I have considered the following:


Hardness off tyre (Due to sand driving a to hard tyre cant deflate properly

Size on wheel

Width of wheel
The trasiler is standing most of the times, so I'm sure tire manifacturers have thought of this.

A few years ago, I put 15" wheels on my trailer. I'm going back to 14" now. I have to replace tyres and 14' bakkie tyres are not only readily available everywhere, but significantly cheaper than 15".

i normally just match the rim on my truck which is a 16 inch but would go at least 15 for a boat trailer that you going to pull on the beach

Cant comment on wheel size but after years of owning boats i would highly recommend galvanised rims, stay away from epoxy, steel or alloy rims

Will agree go 15 but seems like the good tyres are getting scares in that size.  I currently have 31x10.5R15 on my trailer and it floats nicely on the sand.  Would probably go 245/75/R15 which is a lot cheaper but still good width and big sidewall. I like a good all terrain tyre ( I have Khomu Venture A/T) . Burquip rims are around R500 of a 15 and then good tyre around R2000 but you can shop around.

Not an expert in this field at all.
There ks a trailer shop in Silvertondale in Pretoria called roadque, sur they would be able to give you good advice.
Went to Sodwana over the weekend, passed a couple of trailers and boat trailers on the side of the road with bearing problems.

My advice, if your boat or trailer will be standing for long, put it on tressels, and service before any long trip, just my 2c, but being a boatowner, I am sure you know this by now.
