Fishing gear for South Coast

We are going to the KZN South Coast in December and I want to buy my husband a rod and / or some fishing gear for his birthday (his birthday is in a few months).
I know absolutely nothing about fishing, so I have no idea where to start or what to look for.
We stay in a very remote area so I have to order something online.
My husband is quite experienced with fresh water fishing, but not so much salt water fishing. So i want to get some basic "entry level" gear.


Can anyone please give me a few suggestions w.r.t what type of rod, reel, etc to look for?

It all depends on your budget and what type of fishing he will be doing. Has he got any experience with multiplier reels. What fish he will target and so on.
My suggestion will be if he is not familiar with multiplier reels to get a spinning reel, something like a Shimano 5000 and pair it with a 12ft rod. This combination is very good for scratching and can be used for spinning as well.
The other members are much more experienced and will be able to give muck better advice.

Sound advice. If Hubble is experienced in fresh water fishing he'll be used to spinning. Same thing in the salt just on a slightly heavier scale.(I'm no expert but I have fished fresh and salt for a year or two)

Hi Charlie,  :welc: , the basics remain the same, it's the equipment that differs, without knowing what he wants to target, it will be difficult to give advice, it won't be easy to get one outfit to suit all occasions, where about on the south coast will you be staying, then hopefully members from the area can give a more informed opinion.
