Catching Chokka off of Durban
« on: April 26, 2018, 09:52:48 AM »
In the mid 70's I used to fish out of Durban on something like the Sarie Marais, leaving from a jetty in Maydon Wharf.

As the boat left the harbour, the gillie would drop some chokka jigs off the stern and by the time we got out to the deep we had enough chokka for the day.

Is there still chokka about, and does anyone catch it?
when I die, may my wife not sell my fishing tackle for what I told her I paid for it... and I have bought more, a severe case of TA

Personally i've never heard of guys fishing for chokka in durban.

However when watching the sein netters bring in their nets, they almost always have quite a few squid in the net

My father told stories of them fishing for bay squid back in the day, using a light that they would hang close to the water at night., once the first bay squid (pilot) would come up it was always left, it would then decend and the whole shoal would come up to the surface. They would use big nets resembling pool nets to catch them. The popular spot to catch them was at cockaroach corner near the coaling appliances. I seriously doudt if bay squid are caught in the harbour now a days

0ver the years we have caught a number of squid off shore in various areas. Never really in any quantities though.  . There were times that we specifically targeted " bay squid" as are caught  by the netters. We have had varied success too. Mostly a summer.pursuit. We probably caught 3 or 4 different species too.  Had success in various areas up and down the coast. Slow in daylight but improved nocturnally when we got our act fogethher with lights and nets too.

Havnt done it for a while, easier.to import.50 kg of chokke from our mates in PE or St Francis.
