Retvlei vs Baby Shoes
« on: April 17, 2017, 09:00:33 PM »
Hi Guys

I am keen to know what the principle is behind the use of these two popular conventional rigs. Any information on the variations and which one works when and why? I normally use the rietvlei and find when using the baby shoes rig that both hooks hook the fish, one hook on the mouth and the other on the bottom fin close to the tail.

Testing 3 rigs this  weekend was one of my main missions, Sliding Rietvlei, Baby Shoes and "Boer  strop"(aka Vaaldam rig).
Tests were done at Bloemhof in the  river below the dam wall.
I tried to keep everything as consistent  as possible, same bait and size of mielie bomb.
Results over two sessions:
Vaaldam rig - 19 Carp avarage weight of 1,4kg.
Rietvlei - 14 Carp avarage weight of 1,7kg.
Babyshoes - 15 Carp avarage weight 1.65kg and a 1kg barbel.
Not conclusive but that is the past weekends result.

I am a big fan of the rietvlei (sliding) trace, but have seen various results where the vaal dam rig and the baby shoes rig outfishes it or doesnt fish as well. I dont think it makes a huge difference, it all depends on what bottom you are fishing, if you are fishing rivers or dams etc. But as Nooduck mentioned, test them out and see what works for you  :-)

99% of all competitive bank anglers fish the gly rietvlei and boerstrop if they need distance.  The problem with the babyshoes is that the other bottom hook get stuck easily.

Hi! Gents. Please forgive my ignorance but can you please explain or post a pic of the vaaldam and boere strops. Does a sliding rietvlei mean that it does not have the swivel at the top of the race?

No problem at all...

Here is an example of a normal and a sliding rietvlei: http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,4843.0.html

Thank you WK.

I've tied both of these from the pics. Is the Vaaldam similar to a banana trace used for scratching in the surf? Can I just replace the sinker with a bomb?

Thank you once again. Nice catch. I called this type of rig baby shoes. I'm gonna test both at Bridal Drift near East London early next month.

This is a Vaaldam trace, the same one used for kurper fishing.

The trace people call or know as the baby shoes original name is actually a "krap ogie".
