Hi all the southern Capers.

Who knows anything about fishing at Gourikwa Reserve close to Gouritz mouth.

I am thinking of a few days there in December.

I haven't fished there really,but know of some good catches of Galjoen and Cracker...I'd say it's mostly the same as Gouritz coast,just as rocky,so I'd suspect to find all the same species there...Cape Lady(Cape Moony..?),Galjoen,white Musselracker,Elf,Kob,Jan Bruin,Hotties,Kolstert,Stumpnose,Poenskop and perhaps Steenie and Grunter if lucky...I shared this a while ago,you should find some of the same species as in this thread... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=17541.msg296913#msg296913

I have never been a successful sea shore angler but I think I should be able to target some black tail and  shad from the side there.

Also I am between the Still bay and Goutitz rivers so I should be able to find a spot along either of these two rivers for a gunter or Steenbras.

Any info on the coastline and these rivers will be very welcome.

If I totally blank I should be able to get a deeper charter from Mosselbay.

So much info I see you refer to reins Nature reserve it's new name is Gourikwa.
So your info is invaluable.

My river tackle might be to light for this trip.

If you want to target Grunter and the odd Steenie then I'd try Gouritz river at some of the spots that I mentioned at the end of this thread... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=17533.msg296841#msg296841
You can have a lot of fun on light tackle with plugs,spoons,paddletails etc. targetting Leeries and kob(Caught a few Kob and Leeries using bucktails too.. )Otherwise if you up your tackle a bit you can try for the bigger "boerkabeljou",bigger Leeries and Blue shad with live mullet,some 5-10kg  swim up that river and Kob up to 50kg at times... If all else fails you can try a charter like Go fish in Mosselbay...The Kob derby is held in December too...

Wow,I miss Gouritz.. Another nice thing to look out for if you have a bait permit,as bait for a Cracker or to eat yourself,are the big Allikreukels which you'll find amongst the rocks at Spring low,they usually hide amongst the sea urchins,I think for protection... Anyway,some as big as Grapefruit... Lots of Occies too...If you need any more info on where to source different baits just ask...

As a simple river and deep sea fisherman I have to change a few processes for this trip.

I know the area is known as a private nature reserve but I asume that it is not a marine reserve so making some bait at the surrounding rivers and some live bait.

I am also considering some soft baits like cameo worm. (Never had any success on drops hot but willing to try)

A few lures for cob and especially some shad. Will the season be open in December?

Some chokka and pilchard from Mosselbaai.

OK so I went scratching in the store room for a rod to use.

I found this custom made Rod my wife had made for my 30th birthday that I have never used because I don't do the rock and surf thing.

It was made by Erroll Holmes as a general purpose light tackle shad rod with my name on etc. Made in 1996.

By the time I make my first cast with it I would have it for more than 20 years.

It was always to big for on the boats

I guess it is about 12 feet long and I see the tip is broken.

I will be scratching some more to see what reel to pair it with.

Now does anybody have a time machine.

This year has been tough and working 7 days a week has meant no fishing days yet.

It is funny how just booking a place and knowing there is some fishing on the way changes your mindset!!

Al amped as if I am going tomorrow.

OK so eventually I am here will be making my first cast ever with occie leg in about half an hour.

As we arrived in Gouritz I saw a fisherman  with a beautiful Mossel cracker. 

I guess about 8kg he was putting it on his bakkie so no c&R.

It still got me excited.

Just now while tying my hook on that familiar beating in the chest started.

That dry mouth and slight shake known as viskoors.

There is only a few days left of 2016 and I have not had a line in the water.

OK day 1 quick session was a blank.

I tried occie legs got some packers but no bites.
Then tried some spoons but no takers.

Later again some occie and then chokka.
Nothing.

Rain came in so came back.

I am just not a rock fisherman. Got stuck so many times.

Fell around like a drunken sailor.

But I must say just even those few pecks is a wonderful feeling.

Ai this mornings session only gave me some bloodied knees.

Not even one bite and a couple of tumbles on the rock.

Got stuck a few times.
