Micro Bassing

Went to my local dam last week to look for some vlei kurper and dwarf kurper... Think it was a bit cold or the fish were fussy, either way I didnt manage to get a pull with these species. So armed with my 4'6 Berkley Cherrywood and my Foxx Rippa 500 (Thanks Willie) loaded with 4lb nanofil I tried to get some small Bass. It went well. I managed 12 Bass and lost one Carp (About 1kg) on the bank... Nice to feel a fish fight again because I have been so swamped with work I havent been fishing much this year. Anyways heres some pics for those of you who are interested

Thanks Hermann, very greedy fish! Nothing to write home about, but was just happy to be fishing again.

Hi WK well done with those little ones, they look very healthy. The only thing I noticed the way you hold those little ones by the bottom lip is not the way to hold them
they need to be supported by supporting the whole body not just by bottom lip. " SORRY " just the weight of the body can cause there jaws to break or become disfunctionable that happens a lot and then they are thrown back and land up starving to death.
Thanks Laurie

Hi Laurie, thanks for that, and my apologies. I just have always held bass that way...

I've seen many, many pics of Bass being held by the lip... it's so widespread, I thought it was the right way to do it, even though it never looked fish-friendly! Especially with bigger Bass... always wondered how they survived without dislocations and tears...??
Any chance of someone doing a repeat of that article? Would be nice to read.

You can hold it by the jaw, as long as you support it's weight...

Ja was thinking the same thing Walks , as in support the body weight of the fish ... trouble is most of my recent catches have been so small , there is no body weight ..

Fished for Trout at Emhlangeni on Saturday, managed 30-40 between 7 of us. We also caught some greedy Bass, managed about 10 or so...
I love micro fishing, so it was really cool to get some miniature bass inbetween the 500g - 1kg Trout.

Very nice
Reminds me of a day long ago when I caught 75 little bass in a dam near Grabouw in the cape. Mayhem
