Oman Trip
« on: April 03, 2016, 06:53:01 PM »
Just recently returned from a week in Oman. There were 6 of us and 3 have had a few trips chasing GT's so the idea was to scout out the shore fishing and slip a boat trip or two in between for Yellow Fin Tuna. The 3 that had been in Oman before had some good fishing apart from the GT's and the excitement levels were high. Target species from the beach were giant sandies and rays.

If you have not seen the offshore report check it here

To be honest the shore fishing was tough but we worked hard and during the last few days found an area worth returning to next time  :hnthnt:

Andy

Another Andy

Roger

Top Andy lost another big fish due to a 2 piece rod becoming a 3 piece   :-(

I had a swivel brake in half and embarrassingly lost a hook trace  :hehe:  on another

A few species in between, boys had a few more when I wasn't around.

A small fish but quite a big Russel Snapper compared to what I've had in the Eastern Cape

Lure fishing with heavy tackle just wasn't happening but every now and then we would be cleaned up on the light tackle. One evening I had a jighead broken in half. The next morning Andy had a small GT in the surf on light tackle.

I went for a walk and within a few casts had one on a 60 gram metal worked fast on the surface on meduim light tackle.(6000 saragosa 30lb braid)

Well we had found a few so we took a drive down the road and stumbled on some good markes and a few beasts which cleaned us up. 14000 size reel and 65lb braid / tight drag was still not enough hooking them in an area the size of a squash court surrounded by big bolders they took no prisoners. I managed to get 2 babies out of the 6 hook ups I had.

But at least the homemade plugs got some action before I lost them

Next time will be easier

Great post Steve but please include some info regarding where you stayed and who the operator was. I'm sure a lot of guys would be interested as until now I thought only ocean active was operating in Oman

 :tkx:

Half-Pint if it GT'S youre after as far as I'm aware there is Ocean Active http://oceanactive.com/hallaniyat-islands-southern-oman/  operating on the Hallaniyat islands and No Boundaries http://www.noboundariesoman.com/ which operate from the mainland and do runs out every day. Both specialise in GT's and that's the main target species. We wanted to explore southern Oman to see what's up so arranged flights, cars, hotels etc ourselves so next trip would include shore based trip and actual Gt boat trip.
We stayed in Salalah and travelled north and south and after some effort located an area that holds some fish. This area has been hammered by locals so fishing is difficult but I believe fishing the Hallaniyat islands is still good. I expected fish to be throwing themselves at us but not the case. Last trip the islands my mates decided no GT's and had some great fishing catch other species jigging top water etc.

Our boat trip was arranged by my mates but the actual operator was away and the skipper was not that experienced in the area. Nice bloke and South African but still not familiar with the species and area.
