difficult to judge watercolour with cloud cover inshore... looks like they have slight sw there. Saw tackle shop owner in mosselbay advertise fresh sarda's.

but some guys caught plenty off Rocky banks last week and full of worms - so be careful... but plenty of fish around.

demand plays a role like anything i guess, with the weather we having everyone wants to braai. Some negotiating at the bakkie also helps, i try and not look to interested as well as have an idea of what they were paying at the boats... For example when i stopped at a bakkie near plattekloof i asked when i got there 2 years ago if these were the R6 st helena snoek? or the R12 cape point snoek, and that if it's the R12 ones they have been on the back of the bakkie since the morning....

"wat ek jou gese wat ek jou gese toe daai larney omdraai ek jou gese hy ga moeilik wees". Anycase if it's quality fish i'll pay. if it wasnt pap/worms, lekker vet pensie gehad wat mooi braai at R140 you fed a whole family and i still think it's worth it....

You know how much fuel went up the last 4 years, we can't want to pay what we paid last year.

yes still worth it,fed 7 people with it,so R20/person is good,but I got a shock because I lived in Mosselbay for 6 yrs,not buying/eating snoek,price was just unexpected...

tasted great,no worms either

My informant has told me that the Big yellow tail have arrived in the Southern Cape... this is great news, as I will be there in a weeks time.... That patch of warm water near Plett will have them swimming around Robberg and other prominent points along the southern cape coats so get out there and good luck guys... lets see some pics!

tail coming out at Struis..... Both Big Blue and Albatross had good catches on the Alphard. Slow on the 12mile...

The beast from the east is coming but hope it will push in the warm stuff.... (Agulhas forecast)

The SST (08.12.2015) looks awesome....

Well the weather (Agulhas) is a bit iffy for the next few days but some small gaps here and there (Mon and Wed) but the SE is having the desired affect and blowing the warm water closer in - which is what we need!!

Things can change so will be keeping and eye on it!!

Two questions guys
my friend got a 14ft single haul boat, with two 30 HP motors on.
If we launch at Hangklip and go straight south, will we get to the same waters where the guys catch the Tuna or is their a specific place where the Tuna hold.
Second question what is the harbor nearest to cape point where one can launch from. As I really don't want to launch from Gordon's Bay.

1. No, you need to generally aim to the canyon, the ammo dumps or around 42 & 10. You may get lucky out of these areas if the water and bait are right but that would not be the norm.
2. Millers point past Simonstown is the closest.
A small boat is not recommended though as the weather can change quickly and limited power and a couple of fish on board may cause problems.

Only found this thread now .
Couple of tail that been around has been eating loligos and large spinners , some of the comms are gooing penn 49 and big spinners .

Big seas this side , about all I can report .

Just had a chat with the guys out of Struis from yesterday and today... good tail on the Skipskop but the 5mile bank was disappointing with a few smalls and some katonkels.. no news from the 12mile, Alphard or the 45's..... so looks the forecast and SST

What size are the average tail around during the billfish comp? And are there mackerel around??

When is the Marlin comp at Struisbaai ?
Went for some R& S yesterday on the main beach at Bettys water was cold, so lets hope the warm water come closer

TOMT is 14-20 Feb.

Mr. SNR Sir, marlin don't eat yellowtail or mackerel - they are scavengers like barbel.
Your best bet is delicate, light line, (about 3kgs, with a 1/0 mustad) and half a small chicken liver. This should be fished on the bottom, just behind the breaking surf.
One of my secret spots is just out of the harbour and turn left. Drop anchor in front of the blue house (so called due to the prevalence of blue marlin in the area).

It is very important to chum and this is best done by consuming at least 3 packs of beer, 2 bottles of red wine and one bottle of the Cape's finest brandy each evening (we won't complain if you substitute that northern peat water stuff).

Marlin feed best when it is a bit breezy so don't bother going out unless the wind is at least 25 knots.

If you follow these simple guidelines I am sure you will have a comp to remember.
