Braid on a Penn 49A
« on: October 30, 2015, 05:02:24 PM »
I need some advice please. I want to respool my 49A and was thinking of putting 50 or 60 lb braid on the bottom with 200 m of 35-40lb mono on top of that for casting. I always keep my reels really full to help with casting and want to ow how much braid I will need along with the 200m of mono to fill the reel.

The Rock and Surf guys get almost 900m on a 25000 Saragosa a 49 A will probably take close to double that?

Not sure spooling braid on a 49A is a good idea... I doubt the spool will handle the pressure exerted by the braid and mono top-shot, I would guess it would likely pop under stress.

Totally agree with Weedeater !

Strongly recommend you do not put braid on that reel.
Those bakelite spools can't handle the pressure.

Seen many a Penn reel retired by a popped spool - retired a few of my own !

Give that old girl a good service and put her away as a keepsake.

Braid is gunna cost you so invest in a good reel like the Saltist 50 to spool it on and you be SOLID ..

Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better !!
