Two of my sons a friend and myself camped at Mapelane for the long weekend. Jet skis and paddle skis were left behind and all the rock and surf tackle loaded up. Left early on Thursday morning driving into a NE all the way. Lo and behold when we get there some Wally from Richards Bay with the whole family is set up on the site that we had booked. His story was that someone else was on the site that he had booked so it was a "knock on " lucky he didn't get knocked on. Anyway the wind blew day and night NE with hardly a let up. We fished the bay and all the way down to crayfish point every day without anything exciting. Total count was around 16 fish made up of Shad ,Stumpie, nice big Blacktail, stonebream and Galjoen. I saw a few small Shad a skate and not much else come out in the bay. I counted 11 rods with slides out one morning.
The river is almost completely dry. The bay is fairly sanded up and so is Crayfish Point. The water in the taps ( top camp) was a lot better than the last time but still not clean. New doors have been put on the men's showers (raw unsealed pine) so I wonder how long they will last. The showers are still the same with a trickle of occasionally tepid brown water.
but hey it's Mapelane and we would be surprised by any thing else Still my favorite place on the North Coast Nothing like sitting around a braai with lots of beer listening to the Bok game on the radio.
