Hi Reefman,

Where would you target for pompano/stumpies? big sandbanks? white turning water on a bank?

cheers

Yes, also protected bays bordered by sandbanks or reef structure. Stumpies are often found round scattered reef/rock in fairly shallow working water. Cast close to the reefs and sandbanks.

Fantastic, thank you.

Could a 2/0 hook work? been using that but haven't been successful.

Would a prawn/chokka combo work as bait or is natural bait like sea lice best?

cheers

:welc: Naeem , Re : trace on Reefs mail, I prefer a smaller hook than the 5/0,  2/0 or 3/0 is good for me perhaps I only catch small fish  :hehe: . :toppie:

JLP, yes Prawn/Chokka is a great alternative to natural baits like Sealice, if they're not available. It's my favourite bait for Natal edibles.

As far as hooks go, anything from 3/0 to 5/0 will work. In fact, we recently caught Stumpies with tiny hooks, like the Daiichi DH55's on a no-swivel trace.
Nowdays each brand name has it's own sizes  swr a 5/0 Gamakatsu Soi Ring is smaller than a Mustad 4/0 BigGun...  duh Small hooks catch all sizes, big hooks only catch big fish...  :dunno:
What's important, in my opinion, is a Fluorocarbon Hook snoot and a cone sinker that can move around with the surge and current.
Also I always use flotation inside the bait to keep it off the floor and increase movement.

Thanks Reefman and Colin. I tried my luck this weekend. Was bleak ! Durban hasn't been producing anything nice recently.

Hi Reefman,

Thanks.
Would you recommend the 3 way swivel over a sliding sinker or is it kind of the same thing?

Now days I use a Power swivel instead of the 3 way swivel. Once had a 3 way swivel break so I won't use them again. Sliding sinker will work for this trace as well, many guys use them. If you're fishing on rocks just make sure you use a
(click here---> limited sliding sinker in case your sinker gets stuck.
