Mono - Braid - leader
« on: June 07, 2015, 08:28:08 AM »
Hi Ultimate Anglers.
I got my braid, now I want to know which is the best way to fill the reels.
Do you leave a certain meters of mono on the reel and add the braid with and attach the leader last or do you fill the reel completely with braid with the leader ?
Thanks

Henry, I don't use Mono as backing unless I don't have enough braid. To me, adding mono as backing just adds extra unnecessary knots, just something more that can fail. Prefer fewer knots possible.
Tie the braid onto the spool with a Uni knot, tape two turns down with some insulation tape, which also provides a base that the remaining braid can bite into to stop slipping. And then fill the spool. If it's a Grinder, medium tension as you spool.

Once you've spooled, attach a 1m Mono leader that sits outside the guides. You can use: FG Knot, Yucatan, 7turn Uni-Fig 8, Bob Sands knot... they all work.

Use this method:

So you're putting braid onto a Multiplier?
Then I would definitely put quite a bit of mono on as backing. Works out quite expensive filling the entire reel with Braid on a Multiplier. I would only use the braid as 'topshot' - put maybe 2-300m of braid, the rest mono...

Thanks for the info Reefman. Will I have any issues if i used braid on the multiplier reels ?
Will there be any problems in case of an over wind ?
Must still do my homework before i decide which reels I'm going to use for the braid.
If it's better for a spinning reel then i will make a plan to get a decent spinning reel.

ya Henry, braid on a spinning reel is very easy to use. On a multiplier it's much more difficult. You need to be a good caster to use it properly. With overruns, it works out very expensive in the long run. If you have to use scissors then it's expensive! Also braid cuts fingers very quickly, this is why i say you need to be a proficient  and confident caster to use braid on a multiplier.

Braid on a spinning reel is easy and awesome to use.

Thanks Reefman
I will rather get a Spinning reel for the braid and leave the multipliers with the mono. Rather safe than sorry

If you load the line on the reel the way you show it, when you cast the line will be twisted so wouldn't it be better to load the line on the reel with a twist in it? Then, when you cast the twist will come out.

What do you think?

?? The whole point of loading the line that way is to minimize line twist! Look at the pic carefully..

Agreed you have loaded the line on to the reel and there is no twist in it (that's assuming the anti twist roller in the bale arm works).  As soon as you cast the line off the reel the line willl have a twist in it which isn't what you want . You want the line to be free of twists once it is off the reel surely as that is when it is likely to tangle?
