Want to give pap gooi a try
« on: February 13, 2015, 11:15:11 AM »
I would like to go and do sme freshwater fishing this weekend. I know nothing about this. So if anyone can advice me on places to go close to Pretoria and what to do I will really appreciate it. I will be using my 12ft and Shimano 5000. What mielies do I need and so on. Do I need a license and where do I get this.
All advice will be appreciated.

Oom Willie

O.k let me see how I can help...

You can go to roodeplaat dam but to the resort on Zambezi road side will try and get a name quickly.
Rust de Winter is close but the crocs can be a problem

These dams are nice and open.

Bait to use

Bom:

Supercast plain mixed with chic chic and some binder

Mielies:

Almond
Honey
Banana

Bleeding Floaties:

Zeekoei
Vampire
Garlic

Floats:

Caramel
Pink Sweets
Plain

Also a deegie works

Vanilla
Caramel

Bom Dip

Perdeby
Honey Glow
Garlic
TPC

I know its quit a lot of options but choose. Carp is sometimes fussy but I think one can catch something with these.

Will get back to you soon on the other locations

Good day Oom Willie.

What Gamkaboer said is very accurate. The following is just my favorite spots,  dips, tips and ideas.

Angling spots are as follows.

Ifafi aquatic club at Hartbeespoort dam is a great place if the family  is going with. clean, grass always cut, swimming pool for the kids, small shop  on the grounds and extremely safe as well as lights, power and braai facilities.  and the fishing isn't to bad either.

Roodeplaat dam you can do as Gamkaboer said, but close to there is also a  smaller place called Marleeu if I remember correctly, have not been there in  about a year, but the angling was amazing.  86  carp landed in 3 days between 3 anglers  smallest was 2.3kg largest was 4.5kg, so serious tempo fishing. There is  also a Baber hole when you go to the far left of the place where my friend  pulled out a 16.7kg and I was left with only a 7.5kg lol. but I don't know if  they sorted out the facilities as of yet.

And my favorite spot if you dint mind the drive and you can get a spot is  Damalachite about 8km outside Paarl. Carp I have caught there was a 4.5kg, 6.8,  7.2, 8.6, 9.7kg. also the only carp I have ever cought there over 3 sessions.  Lots of Muddies to keep you busy on extreme light tackle its allot of fun and  biggest I have got there was a 3.8kg.

If you want Baber there watch out as they are extremely strong and they are  usually very big. Smallest I have gotten there was a 7.2kg and the biggest I  have personally seen there was 18.9kg. bigger have been recorder as far as the  owner of the place is concerned.

Bait and rig for you to start of with is one that I always use from the word  go.

Rig

I only use one hook on my rig to make sure that if I get the fish on the  line I don't get snagged because of the other hook. normal rietvlei rig with  just the bottom hook.

Bait

On the hook itself I use one plain float of either yellow, red or orange  depending on how dirty the water is, dirtier the water the brighter the color,  clear water I got for darker like red. then I put dough on the rest od the hook  so that the hook bait looks like a bug of sorts with the dough being the body  and the float the head. PS if you have the time have a look in the neerby trees  in the area to see what kind of insects you can see, trick I learned from the  fly-fishing guys, that should give you an idea of what float to use to attract  the carp to the bait as well as make sure they recognize the bait somewhat.

Then on the BOM I use normal supercast combined with peanut voer mix 2 parts  suppercast with 1 part peanut voer. I also always take some Flour with just  incase I need the bom to bind better.

On the bom i put a combination of custard powder and florescent powder. 4  parts custard with 1 part florescent powder. makes for a nice change in the  water color in your feeding area as well as attract more carp as the powder  disperses in the water.

Dips

I use Carp cream as my go to dip. Also some banjo. Only after a few hours of  no results will I try winters sp and something like duiwelsdrek but sweet will deliver  results 90% of the time so try out the carp cream, never failed me before.

On the BOM I also use some FX bolldip.

Now the FX is just a combination of florescent with caramel again. only  reason why I ad this is because the custard and florescent powder will go of  the bom as soon as it hits the water but the FX bolldip lingers and disperses  with the BOM on the bottom of the dam.

For Baber you can try and get hold of some Shitty Baber, and day old  chicks. get a syringe from your local pharmacy and then inject the Shitty  baber into the Chick.

BE WARNED. The shitty baber smells like real well the name said it all, make  sure you don’t get any on your hands and you rig up your bait away from camp as  the smell is really disgusting. the only place I know of that sells it is  Piets hengel in pta .

This is what I have been doing for years and has worked for me most of the  time.

there are allot of other ways to do it and allot of dips out there, but if  you buy them all you will need a truck just to get your dips there. this  should get you an idea of freshwater angling as well as the way things are done.

hope this helps.

Lol I think people make it complicated.

I have been at hengelaars vriend about 3 years ago, I was rigged with 60dips and 25 bolldips. I had everythin gi have ever needed according to the shop owners, other anglers and the forums. put out the bait and nothing happened the whole day. next morning a guy pops in next to me with a old ron, a old mazda rusler , a hart pot and 15min after casting he got a 6 odd kg carp.

I was astounded and went to ask the toppie what he was using.

plain and simple pap with sugar.

I thought luck of the draw, but as it was my one rod was out of the water and I thought let me give it a go. he gave me a handful and I put a bit on. 30 min later I  thought I was right, just a lucky fish. as I walked towards my rod to take it out and go to my next dip on in the box, well what do you know, the reel goes crazy. no the biggest, 3.2kg carpo, but there you have it something that has been working for the past 30 years and there is worked for me.

got another few also on the pap, but nothing worth mentioning total was if I remember correctly 6 fot rhe rest of the day all on pap lol.

Yip sometimes we do get to complicated  :hehe:  I am trying to think back to what my dad was using but I was still very small then but I can remember cake flour and mielies. And for barbel he used chicken livers or gauntlets I think. But thanks for all the advice really appreciated. Hopefully I will be able to post a pick on Monday  :hehe:

Willie, you crazy, this papswaaing is hard work and today's modern Carp only eat Haute Cuisine!

When I was a laaitie the best bait was mielie pap with a bit of flour and custard kneaded with a raw egg into a more elastic dough to make it a bit more sticky.

Carp also did not say no to a plain single nice big cooked yellow mealie kernel on a skelm hook. Think they are now spoiled for choice.

Thereafter reserve baits for other fish were nice big earthworms, brown bread kneaded into a dough with sorghum beer, those nice big black crickets, and chicken livers.

You cant go wrong with the advice and places pointed out, probably the safest.

Good luck!

So on Sunday I went to All out Angling. Kallie to me anybody standing next to me is a XXL except Half Pint  :hehe: . Well the guy that helped me was very helpful and wow is there a lot of dips, floaties and all sorts of muti. He gave me so me stuff and I had to get 2 rod holders.
Then I started my journey to Harties. I remember about 30 years ago I went there with my family for a Sunday at a place called Roos se Oord. After traveling about 4 times around Pretoria I find my way there a journey that took me 2 hours from Weirda Park in Centurion  :hehe: .
Arriving there it was already past 11 am and I started to rig up. Tried the Rietvlei set up and soon I had my mielie bom and all the other muti ready. Not easy to cast with a mielie bom on my first cast the mielie bom went in a totally different direction then the rest of the hooks and sinker. Ok I then realized to not try to cast to the other side of the planet and I saw a sand bank like 20 meters from me. I then gave it another go and landed just before the sand bank where I wanted it.
Put the rod in the rod holders, put the policemen on the line and started the long wait with my eyes zoomed and locked on this little white and red policeman.
While totally hypnotized bu this little object I saw a movement in the corner of my eye. Now not wanting to take my eyes of the policeman I tried to see what is here next to me. Then it come into view. I have spend a lot of time on our farm in my young days and my father had pigs on the farm but never have I seen a boar this size. My mind jumped to a program I saw on the TV about this massive boar I think it was something like godzilla not sure. This thing is huge and I went into a state of hybernation could not move and also no more watching the policeman. It then decided to come and have a bath in the river next to where I was fishing. For 5 minutes I did nothing just sit motionless and hope he was a friendly guy.
He was little perturbed with my presence and after he had his bath which felt like hours of he went but really a magnificent animal.
For the rest of the day, the muti did not help. I did not even get as much as a bump on the policeman. Although there was a Gaint Kingfisher and he is much better at fishing then me. Every now and again he would dive into the water and get his meal.
I also have seen a lot of Bass so it will be better to do spinning and using flies.
Still a new experience for me next time I will take more muti and also try a late afternoon or very early session.
Thanks for all the advice I got from the memebers
