Wavecrest - the good and the bad

Thanks Mike and ja, awesome place but no big hopes for the accommodation - we left our big safari chiller there with all our bait in it - despite numerous phone calls, emails and promises from the staff to take it to East London, nada.  I think that we can laugh that off as gone for good by now.

What a great pity about your stay!


I must say that I can really recommend Seagulls down at Qolora. We went down in January/February and they run specials at times for I think around R360 a night, including breakfast and dinner. We had a absolutely wonderful time, the staff are extremely friendly, the service in the dining room is good, and the food was really good!! The go out of their way to make sure your stay is nice! My folks have been going there for years and love it. The only issues we could complain about, was water,haha when the hotel was full the pressure isn't great!


The fishing is good, you have some fantastic estuary fishing close by, there is a lot of kob, bronze bream, cracker etc around! We caught a lot of bronzes upto 2,5/3kg and what was nice to see was all the young poensies around upto 2kg! They have a brilliant Gillie and he really does go out of his way to get fresh bait and put you onto the fish!!

Wavecrest was on my bucket list until today. Just got back from Bulls Inn in Mpame after 12 nights. The only place in the Kei that I've been to that is clever enough to target fisherman specifically,  and it seems they doing well. With Mpolompo being around the corner, and the owner having a boat he charters, it's a great recipe. You will have your complaints - my biggest being the quality of the gillies. Some dripping taps etc, but then you're not paying the same as the other hotels. No fishable river on your doorstep, but Mpame point is a 10 minute walk and offers great fishing.

@ Trevour  - Mpame is one of my most favourite places on the wild coast  We try and go there once a year but we stay at the cottage with the deck around the corner from Bulls Inn.  We hoping to go there later this year.

I am so very sad to hear your report on the state of the hotel, food, service etc. I have to say that I have noticed some of the very same issues, and on my last trip there a couple of months back, I was concerned.


Wavecrest has always been one of those very special places to me. The fishing potential is amazing and it is such a beautiful spot. I hope that your comments are taken in the right light by the owner, as positive criticism, which I believe it is. It would not take much to get the hotel back to where it should be, mainly some training of staff.


Sorry you had issues, but well done on a lovely Perch! what a spectacular catch!
