Ultegra 14000 stripped worm gear
« on: January 06, 2015, 08:21:39 AM »
Hi All,

Caught a few diamonds this holiday and on a 40kg model the worm gear stripped preventing the line to wind up and down. ...and no, before anyone asks I did not fight the fish off the reel but used the rod.

So my question to the techie guys out there:
1) What material is the worm gear made of? Seems like hard plastic or soft metal
2) What is the main gear made of?
3) Is there a Shimano reel that ahs the same worm gear but made out of a harder metal which can then be used to replace the stripped softer material?
4) If so, will the gear on the worm gear not also need to be replaced?

Are you talking about the Worm Shaft or the idle gear in front of the Worm shaft? Never seen a worm shaft strip before, and if the Idle gear is knackered, chances are the Pinion gear is damaged as well...

Ok, that's weird. Never seen a shaft go...! Big fish eh...  :hnthnt:

Phone Rapala VMC in JHB. They are the Shimano agents and will be able to tell you what's what.

Only way to tell if there's a replacement part from another reel is to check the Part number on the Schematics, then compare it to other reel part schematics. The same number = the same part used in different reels.

That worm shaft is a known weak point on the Ultegras. Mine was also knackered and I had hardly pulled any fish with it. I think it may get damaged when removing that spool support bearing :dunno:

This was the first time ive opened the reel so I am sure its due to pressure. Cant find anything similar on the other reels parts list

Shimano had a problem a few years ago on one of there fresh water reels. If I remember correctly it was the GTE range. Also the wurm gear.
