So here is the definitive Photographic Tutorial on how to service a Daiwa Saltist Spinning Reel.
A bit of a review as well... not in the class of Alan Hawk, but just my own humble personal observations!
Thanks to FishStyx for the use of his reel to do the Tut.

It's a pretty reel! Solid build, chunky and robust. Simple in design with some nice features...

It's classed as a Heavy Action reel...

Fast action! 6.2:1 !! Great for Popping!

Anti-reverse bearing PLUS an Anti-reverse Dog Pawl. Nice!!
No reverse action switch either! Big Plus!!  duh Don't know why they even add those to reels?!

Double Oscillating gears for smooth, silent action.

The handle is a solid one piece handle, but unfortunately is not serviceable.

Underneath the spool...

With the spool removed...

This is quite a neat and solid method of holding the spool in place. Provides quite a solid foundation for the spool to rest on - all metal too.

A brass Pinion gear rests one side in a Plastic bushing collar and the other on a large bearing.

Screws are all Allen Key slots

Remove the bearing... not so easy!

Very interesting setup withe the Anti-reverse Dog Pawl and a Pawl spring that is attached to the main Drive Gear...

Another interesting design feature... The teflon Oscillating gear underneath the metal Oscillating gear, with a spring that pushes the 2 gears in opposite directions. This action results in better grip of the Drive Gear and reduces movement and friction on the gears... much more silent rotation!

All the bearings in this reel are sealed Stainless. Opened them up to check how well they are greased. After many hours of use, they look fine!

Quick tut on Servicing your bearings... removing the shields, cleaning, regrease and replace the shields.

It's not absolutely necessary to remove the shields on both sides. One is enough usually. Once opened, agitate the bearing in the benzine and all the grease will dissolve.

Once done, replace the LHSide plate bearing...

Make sure that the Clutch Cam retainer lies flat in the grooves of the Anti-reverse bearing casing.

Now for the Drag...

Carbon fibre Drag washers, but not woven, like Carbontex. Rather they looked pressed. And rather stiff and brittle looking.

The Line Roller

The Bail spring

The Saltist has done away with the Automatic Bail Trip, which was a really useless function for serious casters anyway. It now has a Manual Bail trip feature, and a great spool brake, which holds the Bail open when casting. It cannot snap shut automatically, nor can the spool move during a cast... great feature!

Size compared with the Sustain 5000. The photo is quite deceiving... the reel is much bigger than the Sustain 5000. Probably the same size as a Stella 10000.

Reefs, would like to hear your expert conclusion, and finding of the reel.

Excellent TUT but think I shouldn't try it  :hehe:

I quite like mine but have not caught any serious fish on the reel. It feels quite solid, nice retrieval rate, but have a feeling that one should not fight beyond the reel's weight class.

Always liked the look and feel of these reels , solid with no frills  , not sure how it would do as a spinning reel to use all day , but im sure it would do the job whether off a boat or from the shore without letting u down ..

Don't think there are any issues with this reel besides some probable Drag spike because of those compressed Carbon washers. But decently greased, they should be ok until they crack or break.

Watched Dean Pretorius land some big Lemon Sharks 30-40kg on this reel (think it was the Seychelles somewhere) - with a Drag rating of 10kg, I think it can land most edibles. It seems to be reasonably watertight as well, which is good for use offshore.

Has an aluminium body and side plate, a machined alu handle (1 piece) and an aluminium spool. So there's no plastic in the body of this reel.
I tested the Spool twist and Rotor torque under load and I was very impressed. That's due to that Spool metal support on the drive shaft. Very often in reels of this class there is too much sideways play in both rotor flex and the spool twist.
Bearings on the Oscillating gear, bushing for the Pinion gear and no moving parts touching the body frame makes for a long-lasting reel...
Has a very good line capacity as well.

Never been a great fan of Oscillating gears, much prefer the Shimano wormshafts, they're just so much smoother.

Could have done with a serviceable handle. And could also have done with a better angle to the spool lip for distance casting.

Oh, nearly forgot... you can take the Side plate off with a few screws to access a quick lube of the reel... very useful!

I think this is a solid investment, and good value for money.

Awesome tut Reez  :+ cred:

Got a couple of the 6500H and really chuffed with them. One of them has been sounding a bit rough so perfect timing for this tut to pop up.  :tkx:

The 4500 and 6500 are almost Identical internally. So this will help.

Brilliant Reefs. Thanks so much for that.

A bit of history on that particular reel... I have done a LOT of throwing spinners (that's my 2nd spool of fireline on it, the 1st having worn out despite being turned end for end) but it's never been seriously tested by a big angry fish. Most notable was an approx 20kg Eagle Ray at Kleinemonde in E.Cape

It's mostly been paired with a Poseidon Ultra Light but also at times with a pimped 12' Shad Pro. I thought I'd upgraded the drag to C/tex but I now remember, I only upgraded both 6500s.

Great tut bud  :+ cred:

Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.
