reel placement?
« on: October 10, 2014, 04:48:43 AM »
Whats up guys, sorry to bug, but I've bin looking online trying to find info on reel placement for slide baiting, I've here in in California we typically have the reel seats at least 24" on say a 12ft  surf rod, but upon watching all the sliding videos I notice you all have the reel seat way low, never seen that before, and I'm curious what the cons, benefits, placement, and how much different is the casting? Any info would greatly be appreciated :uarocks

A low reel position changes the leverage within the casting setup. When you   cast with the same amount of effort as when the reel is mounted high, the   butt and mid-section of the blank bend more, offering better loading of the blank and further casts. This is especially noticeable with heavy tackle (7-10oz sinker weights), not as noticeable with 5 and 6 oz weights.
The low reel position also allows the right hand side, arms, shoulders to follow through in the cast much more powerfully, as the Right hand is only controlling the rod, with a firm fixed grip, not lightly, as you would when your thumb is controlling the reel in a high postion.

:corrct: ..I concur ...even I throw low weights from 1oz to 2,5oz...a lower reel seat is much better...LEVERAGE as Reefs says is very NB

when fighting a large fish surely it must be more comfortable than a rod with a higher rod seating  :dunno:

Ray, our tackle is specifically geared towards our unique style of fishing, longer, stiff HMG rods, with real seated low on the rod. If you're keen on sliding, you'll need to likely upgrade your reel to the likes of a Saltist 50H and possibly order a rod from one our manufacturers here. Gremlins in Margate, KZN make arguably the best HMG rods suited for sliding: http://www.gremlinsmargate.com

Our casting method is also likely very different to what you're used to, the video Reefz made a while back, gives a good indication of how we cast in S.A

Get the method right with some practise, and you can hit 130m+

Don't we also do the right-hand reel thing, while in America and Australia the reels are always left-hand reel?

i think on the spinning reels they use the handle on the left hand side of the grinder but for convenional reels handle on the right unless the manufacturer makes left handed reels for the leftys.

:tkx:I appreciate  the responses very much, and seeing as there are really not many companies that make the non return swivels that I can find, so I'm going to order and try out the non return slides from breakaway. The rod I'm going try this with is a 12ft daiwa emcast xxheavy casting rod, I stripped off the handle and put shrink wrap, and the reel to start will be a daiwa sealine 50hv with a power handle, it has clamps that I can mount the rod on, and figured 12" is a good spot to mount it. At the moment its loaded with 80# power pro and around 20 feet of 50# mono shock leader, I currently have 8oz sputniks, and the realistic targets here would be a leopard shark(-50#), a batray(-200#). Unlikely but maybe is a tope(-80#) or cow sharks(-200#), the other is giant black seabass(-300#), those last 3 are highly unlikely, but all is possible. I'd like yo give this gear a shot before I were to make a big investment in the gear from overseas. :corrct:
And yes most Spinning reels sold, and typically used are with the handle on the left side, while the casting gear is on the right, it makes no sense to me because you would figure you'd want your power arm for holding the rod, but regardless I use left and right handed reels

Good point. The thing with the clamp is, although lower down on the blank you still need a trigger real seat to get maximum benefit. Maybe see if you can get the real seat mounted lower?  :dunno:  I can help you with non-return slides, but with the postal strike on here at moment, no telling when I can get them to you

I'll look into getting a real seat with a trigger mounted, I guess it makes sense for my weaker arm to have a bit more leverage during the cast, only time will tell on all else tho...

Ray, it sounds like you,ll have to come to South Africa and target some proper sharks, blacktips, bronze whalers, Zambesis, Raggies etc.

The slide is a great technique to get out big baits deeper, good luck on getting some proper sharks that side..

:tkx: I really appreciate all the extremely helpful information guys, seriously a trip to S.Africa to do some real sharkin from shore would be a dream trip in the far future, but for the near future I'll b be working on trying to make my own non return clips and giving it a shot here for my main target, the cow shark and tope :shrk:

Nice one!! I can send you a couple non-returns when our postal strike finally get's resolved (don't ask...) but the most important thing is to learn the techniques and tricks to sliding first.

Ray,
I suggest you try and get hold of someone who stocks Purglas rods in California. Seems like William Booth is your go-to man. If you do a Google search on Purglas rods in the US you should find enough information on how to get your hands on one of these rods.

I agree with the above set-ups, just like to point out that sliding with braid is not really a good proposition. We use thick mono (.50 to .55 mm). You stand to get monstrous tangles with braid and the slide (it also does not 'hold' the slide as mono does to impart the 'non-return' function). The mono also helps in the fight, as the resistance of the line helps in the fight. The 'feedback' from the shark on braid is also very severe and tireing.
