My new ride
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:59:14 pm »
Hi guys thought I would share my new ride and see what you guys think. How do I go about doing the change of ownership? :dunno:  And is it necessary to get a skippers licence?

Hi Gavin I am no pro but your ride looks great. I stand to correction but as far as I know you don't need a skippers license for 15hp an less for estuaries and inland waters. Having said this, the skippers is quite straight forward so my advice is just do it. Once the gogga bit you are going to go for bigger and sooner or later you will need the skippers.

Hi Gavin, if it is a 15 hp motor or smaller you don't need a skippers ticket, I'm not sure about buoyancy though at below 15hp I think the boat is unclassified  :dunno:

Is the trailer licensed, because that's also an issue you need to sort out to make her legal for towing. Nigel Caravan & Boating have always sorted my boats and trailers out, so perhaps give Chris Jansen a call on o82 413 64o7, he is a boat surveyor and can advise you. They also do skippers ticket courses.

I've always had great service from them

Cool thanks guys, its a 30hp. The trailer is licensed, just need to do the change of ownership, do you have to get it road worthy-ed again? :dunno:  Thanks Dodger Ill give him a call. Im selling my smaller boat and trailer but it doesn't have a licence at all, how easy would it be to get a licence? :dunno:

Gav, to make it legally yours you need only/must register the trailer in your name.

To use the boat it needs to be registered by one of the agencies of SAMSA, you can register it cat R or E depending your choice and safety equipment on board.

Yes for the type vessel and engine you need at least an inland/restricted waters skippers license. One day you will want to do more or go further so my advice do Cat C and get it over and done with. Its fun to do and who knows what new requirements will be thrown in the way with all the nonsense they dream up these days.

Enjoy it.

Gavin if you only going to use the new boat at the dam you need reg the boat as Toppie said under cat R. The attached is a quick checklist of Cat R equipment needed on the boat.

You can go to there website: http://www.samsa.org.za/category/social-tags/checklist
and just scroll down to the desired Cat.

Welcome to Samsa world bud but most of the stuff is needed for safety purposes which is a very good thing.
