Casting a heavy action vs a medium action setup,
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:41:12 PM »
Hi guys,

Im new on ultimate angling , please excuse the ignorance.

I am having some trouble getting some distance with my Surf combo,
Its a shimano beast master surf pro heavy action, it has two tips, 7-8, and a 8-9 oz,
The best distance i got this far, was with the easy cast, over my head.

So I got a dvd, explaining the off the ground cast, and have seen diagrams on here aswell about the standing position and everything,

My question is , will it be recommended to perhaps get a medium action rod for getting the distance and then shift to a heavy action rod later?

I am planing to do some sliding so that is why i bought a heavy action rod.

So i was thinking perhaps to get a medium action 14ft for practising my technique and to end up casting better because i will be able to load the medium rod easier?
I was thinking like a 4-6oz 14ft rod?

Please help,

Thank you.

Awesome reel you have there.

Know you have the dvd on "of the ground casting" but check these clips out they helped me alot.

Reefs makes it look easy but once you have the hang of it it's all about muscle memory so you have to eat, drink and sleep with that action in your head.

Great advice from isivuba. I can add that practice makes perfect. Having said this some of us including myself find it very difficult to load a heavy action rod properly and I have switched to an HMG medium action rod.

if you are sliding for ed's then don't try to cast to Australia... :hehe: I'd say that you need to practice, and use the action that is most comfortable to you and that gets you the most distance, after mastering your casting action and reel control, then only would I try different casting techniques...Remember that when sliding off a beach you'll probably wade a bit,so that fancy new action you've learnt to do off a solid footing(beach/rocks)won't work too good standing chest deep in water... :dunno: when sliding, you cast sinker only as well,so generally flies much further than baited rigs.I'd use the lighter tip with 7/8 ounce sinker and practice with that...(I like the compact teardrop sinkers as apposed to the longer teardrop)the "longer"teardrop wobbles a bit too much for my liking, lessening distance... :cnfzd you could even mag your reel for more distance... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=17731.msg300143#msg300143

here is an example of the sinkers I prefer...

hope this helped... w;k  click on pics to see better... :hnthnt:

Lofty i'm more interested in that bait presentation!!!!...

While on casting, if you rigged the bait the other way around so the "voelertjies" face back up your trace you will also get more distance.....
Men... what lies ahead on that beach... IMMORTALITY.... TAKE IT IT"S YOURS!!!!!!

Hi Marthin, nothing special apparently...as the bait came out looking just as good after 10-15min in the water that day... :cnfzd 2nd pic is the first step and 1st pic was taken after 3-5 pink prawns was wrapped around it...will try the upside down voellertjies thing...thanks w;k

I found that laoding the tip of a heavy rod takes some doing, Im not a big lad but not tiny either (6 foot at 92kgs) and I struggled alot to load the tip of a 9oz heavy 14 foot rod. I now use my assisn beach master medium with the heavy tip 6-7oz and can throw it much further. But take into account that there is more than the rod to get a good cast.

Line that you are using causes drag in the air and can effect the distance, areodynamics of the bait. If you casting out a bait and sinker, then the relative distance of the 2 can effect the casting distance (as the sinker takes the lead and the bait slows it down) so clip the bait to the sinker.

The reel plays a big part too, and the balance between reel and rod (size wise) remember to set the spool speed on the reel (the harder it is the harder it is to take line from it) but if you turn it "off" in totality then you face the overwind problems, so control the spool speed in relation to the sinker speed with your thumb on the edge of the spool breaking the spool so not to get the overwind.

Then there are some techniques in the post above you can play with.

However the more you try the more you learn, it can be fustrating but practise will make it better.

Good luck buddy   :tite

Thank.you for the reply,

I dont want to get a medium action and.trick myself.in.thinking.it.will improve.my.casting.distance,coz only technique can.help.with that.

I have set my cast control, and i am comfortable with the setting.

I am really practising on a regular basis and can cast consistent to 100m,

I have heard a statement that said a medium action is more forgiving and that it is easier.to.cast with a larger margin for errors, and that a heavy.rod bite back and is.more difficult.to master. Is this true?

Guys thanx.for.the replies.

Best would.be to try.the medium action out.right?
