Went down to Kenton on sea on the 12th of July for a week, mostly to spend some time with my friends GL (whom some of you know), and a mate Erich, who I spent many hours fishing with, who was out for a holiday from New Zealand. While the object was mostly just to spend time together, we did manage to get some fishing in. The pickings were not good, but I can only describe 3 of the fish I got as a God given: -
The first was a shad in the river (not the Bushmans.....the other one). We were fishing from the car park near the river mouth. I had cast in with my assassin and Saltiga, with a nice big prawn bait, and a grapnel sinker. I had set the rod down, with the ratchet on, while I fiddled with the Berkley Air. After a while I noticed my line drifting a bit, and thought it was just the incoming tide. When I reeled in, lo and behold a nice sized shad on the end of my line. These fish are notorious for attacking you bait, but not this guy. He swallowed the hook right down.
2) Fishing off the point of the Bushmans river at the rocky ledges at low tide for bream, I was fishing with the Berkley air. We were fishing into the surf at a slight angle, so the waves were washing the line, and once again, after I thought the line had washed far enough to warrant a look at the bait, and a re-cast, I had a nice blacktail on the end. These are also fairly aggressive feeders, and I never felt a thing.
3) Fishing the other river again, near the N2 bridge, I had a live bait mullet out on my assassin, and once again, I put the rod down with the ratchet on, while I fiddled with Berkley Air. We must have had 4 or 5 rode out with live bait mullet. After a while I noticed my line drifting a bit, and thought it was probably a combination of the live bait and a pushing incoming tide. Eventually I wound it in, and had a nice baby garrick in the end. Once again.....no pull, no nothing. We let the garrick go with instruction to go and make babies for us to catch next time.
The one kid we had with us caught a whopper of an octopus and the rocks at the point of the Bushmans river, on one of these finchaser kiddies rods. when we lifted it out of the water, it unhooked itself and climbed into a rock pool. It later climbed out of the pool, walked across the rocks, and jumped back into the sea......that was something to see.
We also caught two small sandsharks and another blacktail (all released).
Despite the lack of fish, it's always good fun to go fishing, and spend time with your friends.
