Shimano Trinidad 30A - Service and maintenance tutorial
« on: May 31, 2014, 03:37:23 PM »
The long awaited Photographic manual on how to Service a Trinidad 30A.

The Anti-reverse bearing... can you believe that it can fit in both ways into it's socket!?! You can easily replace it upside down, without knowing any better! Really epic stupidity.
Only thing differentiating the right way up is a bigger flange/bevel on one end.

For those that are interested, the handle is fully serviceable...

Trinidad 30A vs the TN30 Gold
I'm going to do a bit of a write up on that.
Interestingly... they claim to have the same line capacity...

TN30A 11kg = 24.25lb, call it 25lb = 384m
TN30 25lb = 420Yards = 384m

Can't believe that they can sprout such utter BS. There is NO ways that the 30A has the same capacity as the Gold series. (See the pics in the next post). Simply impossible due to the marked difference in size.

30A has lots of bearings, very smooth, serviceable handle with bearings. The 30A is built beautifully... machined almost like a Saltiga! Smooooth and very solid! But very fast and no braking system either. It spins for at least a minute in free spool, and that's with greased spool bearings!!! Must be a beast to cast it... Will be a great reel in the hands of a Master Caster!

30A has a longer improved Anti-reverse bearing, much better than the Gold's. Also has double dog pawls, a big improvement.

Has Funny Carbon drag washers... like the thin discs of the old Saltist. The bottom drag washers are both thick woven Carbontex, but the middle washers are thin discs. Suppose it beats Dartanium....  :dunno:
The TN30's drag rating with Dartanium washers is 7.5kg, while the 30A has a 11kg rating.
With a Carbontex upgrade in the gold, reckon those drag ratings become quite similar?
And then that Anti-reverse bearing that can fit in both ways...  duh epic fail Shimano.

In the 30A it's a MAJOR mission to remove the spool... can't just remove the LH Side plate, because there isn't one! Side plate and frame are one piece. So quick service and lubes are just not possible.

In my opinion, the Gold Trini, with upgraded Carbontex, a drive shaft bushing upgrade and the stock standard centrifugal brake system (included), wins hands down in plain functionality.

Reefz I have seen you in action at Mapies changing my saltist 50 drag washers and there you made it look easy but I must say this is way more than changing drag washers. Thanks for the time taken to do this tut much appreciated.  :+ cred:

Thanks for the GREAT tutorial!!!! I can go fish that reel with great confidence now.
I will be respooling the reel before our trip end of June and will give accurate figures on the amount of line it takes.
My guess would be about the same or a bit more than a Daiwa 40 but surely less than a Daiwa 50.
Thanks again Tony!!!!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore, Dream, Discover.

does that bar on the right hand side of the spool where the bearing sits come out?

i am trying to measure that bearing but dont know how to take it off i dont wanna add force and damage something>

do you push that little bar to the side or does the whole pin of the spool come out?

The spool shaft is fixed to the spool, you cannot remove it.
The retainer bar is a difficult little mother to remove, but in order to service the bearing, you have to remove it.
Here's how to do it...
http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=10096.0
It must be completely removed to get the bearing out.

Please PM me the bearing sizes for the 30A once you've sized them.  :tkx:

Oh I see now the one end of the pliers have to gap in and the other end doesn't......so one end will be pushing the pin out and other end with the gap sit over the pin.

Reefman I will pm you the sizes when I am done

Doesn't Alan Tani have one on his website? If you can do without your reel for a month or so, I'd be glad to do it Shaun.
