Destination Recommendation...
« on: May 12, 2014, 04:12:00 PM »

Hi guys, looking to plan a jigging and popping trip later in the year but highly confused about where to go to.

I have fished Mitsio in the past and loved it but heard that the fishing has been on the decline there of late.

The exchange rate also makes costs a huge factor of consideration nowadays as these trips can get very costly.

Option i was considering are:

Latham Island Tanzania
Mafia Island Tanzania
Barren Isles madagascar (live aboard)
Hallaniyyat Islands Oman
St Lazarus Banks Moz (Live aboard)

Fishing wise what would you guys suggest?
We want to catch loads of fish but also looking to catch that trophy GT n Doggie.

I have searched the forum but still very undecided.
Still thinking whether im better off just pulling my boat down to inhasorro for a week but i would like to do one of these exotic trips soon again.

All comments are welcome, especially from guys who have fished these areas and can give a comparison of some sort.

Thanx

Hi Mayhem,

The problem you going to have is getting either the best gt fishing or the best doggie fishing, in my opinion oman is going to be the best place to get  your true trophy gts, im talking 50+kgs, the jigging there can also be very good with some proper size ambers 30+kg and all sorts of travelly species, bottom species etc, you will have an epic trip either way.

In terms of doggies I havnt seen a better place than the seychells, but I also havnt been to latham where everyone knows there are monsters!if you can organise a trip to one of the remote attols of the seychells then you are in for a treat with amazing jigging and popping opportunitys, just be sure that the operation you go with is not only a fly fishing company, because they wont have all the marks and experience required for j and p..

chat to cam mundy on the site if you need to know more about oman, he is currently running the operation there!

cheers

We in the same boat to do a trip next year April/May but finding more crew is proving difficult. Might just end up towing the boat up to the Archipelgo for the week

Kegan that is a beautiful specimen in your avatar, where and when did you get it?
Unfortunately price is a big factor as well, and Oman n Remire island seychelles is just out of my bracket.
St Lazurus looking very promising at around 21k based on 5 pax incl flights.
I have heard of some great fish coming outa there...

Prego if all else fails thats where ill be heading...
The right Crew can be Very difficult to come by for these trips. We are 3 so far and waiting for a few guys to confirm. looking at a group of 5 ideally.

Hey GT... Howzit?

No mention of Bassas? Apart from a rather tedious trip there and back, it's quite a surreal location. The surface action is (IMHO) a lot more exciting than the potential for jigging. But I reckon it is a definite bucket item for any J&P angler.

I currently have 2 semi-realistic dreams. St. Laz and Maddys. Would love to do either in the next 12 months.

Failing all these... Papau New Guinea  w;k
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Bassas definitely on the bucket list but just not for now.  The cost on the st laz is too good to resist at the moment.  With rarget species reports n gwn info coming in at the moment we going to book it. ..

Hi GT Mahem, what time of the year are you planning on going through to St Lazarus? As the guys have mentioned, there are a lot of places out there to target good Geets and Doggies, Oman for me is one that is certainly on the bucket list!

The nice thing about St Lazarus (besides the amazing fishing!)is that should you get blown off the bank by bad weather, you get to shelter around the Quirimbas where you will still be treated to some great fishing!

Ok great that's still a good time to go. You should still have the Mantis shrimp breeding then which makes the fishing even crazier! Also still a good time with the weather. Hopefully wont be anything too serious building up! If it does you guys are welcome to pull in for a cold 2m! Most of the guys moor off our island if they get chased off the banks.

Which yacht are you guys looking at booking?

Andrew i completely forgot youre in quirimbas, which island are you on? have you been out to the banks?
we are booking with John Sergel from the yacht dandelion.
Nothing you can do about the weather hey but lets hope it goes well, it would be really sad otherwise.
i booked November because of the mantis and the weather should be ok then save for the odd storm?

No worries man. I am on Quilalea Island. Ok cool I am familiar with the boat Dandelion, they have stopped off here quite a few times. I unfortunately have not been to the banks yet. Am dying to get up that side. Prob organize a trip up there next year unless someone from the area is heading up and I can jump on. The wife however has assured me that if I go there without her there will be k*k.

Yeh weather should be good for you guys!
