Boat registration (SR numbers)
« on: April 29, 2014, 08:59:21 AM »
Hi everyone.
Recently when we wanted to renew the COF of our boat, we were informed that the SR numbers will no longer be used. Is this true?
We are not keen to join a club since we use the boat at the coast once or twice a year, and rarely at the same spot. We don't intend to fish competitively. Thus, there is no real advantage to join a club.

Can anyone advise....

O yes, we live near Pretoria

Certainly not heard of that Bennie.

Contact Indian Ocean Skippers Academy/Two Bar Scuba in Pretoria they do training, surveys and registrations.

Sure they can help you.

A couple of years ago they stopped the SRG numbers, (sports recreation gauteng) and just used the SR number, if they have changed that I don't know but Toppies advice is good.

They have to have a non club type registration surely?

There must be something more to this. I had my duck's COF renewed in December 2013. I then traded it on something bigger and was also told by NPB that the SR numbers were being stopped. I now have a LTB number on my new boat.

For now SR numbers are still valid according to Indian Ocean Skippers Academy/Two Bar Scuba.

They can also do and issue your CoF for you. Best then to use them and convert to their U registry.

Hi All

Sorry to hijack the thread. Just wanting to get some info regarding boat registration.

I too am in a similar position to Bennie.

We inherited a 4.8m duck which we hope to register as a CAT E rating. Will be used predominantly for inland lagoons, rivers and estuaries with the odd outing to sea on very calm days. Even though we are based in Durban, the membership fees for joining DSBC or USBC don't really seem worthwhile considering the amount of use we will get out of it.

Can we register our boat and get an SR number without being a member of a club? If so, how does one go about this? The boat has an existing club number (UML) under its previous R Rating, but we'd like to register the boat as an E rating which would mean that the old number cannot be used.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

a boat registration number is assigned to a person and not a vessel.
Not sure how SR numbers work, but the existing number would need to be changed regardless of whether you  keep the R rating.

Just keep in mind you will need to purchase extra safety equipment to upgrade from Cat R to Cat E. If you going to go to see occasionally you may as well get the Cat D rating. That will allow you to go a little further out.

I agree - don't go out to sea at all or go all in. You are going to need a radio operator course $$ Radio $$, Annual COF $$$. I am speaking as a vaalie and we used to keep a boat at the vile river, but the boys got bored of it and we ended always trying to get out to sea. Also the DSBC gives you access to a nice beach and nice club for general use even if you are not boating.

If you are going to the hassle of getting offshore compliant, you might as well enjoy it more often. Also not too expensive. We were paying around 13k/year for club membership on the vile river (although that included a boat locker) so we thought the ski boat club was pretty cheap. You also get to use the tractors etc at the club.

You can get a nr direc from SAMSA. For Gauteng it will be a DTG nr.  Just phone their office in Pretoria Hatfield for the application forms. They also do the survey and  issue the COC. I  will be doing my renewal this coming Thursday with them.    Regards

I'm glad you brought this up... My boat must also go for its cof, luckily I'm just a category R so nothing extravagant required, but my boat hasn't got a number on at all... it was rebuilt by the guy I bought it from and he pointed out no buoyancy or cof or registration number etc but I figured I'll get all that done in time, the dams I usually launch at, I launch from private jettys and they aren't really hot spots for the "water police" but none the less I would like to get all that done since it's mostly rules in place for my own safety, but... Am I going to struggle with this number on the side of the boat story, I also don't belong to a club and I honesty have no desire to become a member of one either....

Hi There
I have a boat which I bought and am trying to find out some more information on the boat, its number starts with SRSG----E is there a way to find out where this boat was registered, I was told that the letters refer to the club, how do I find out which which club etc. Or does anyone recognize these numbers. Its somewhere in JHB.
Regards

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm not convinced that belonging to a club is a requirement. I have never belonged to a club and my Tomcat was registered. Not sure if it's different up in my neck of the woods.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Hi All

Thanks for the feedback.

The main reason for sticking to CAT E was to enable us to launch legally without having a VHF radio. The downside is that certain clubs won't let you launch at their sites irrespective of what the regulations say. So the plan would be to save up and purchase VHF when the Corona blues dissipate somewhat.

Regarding registration, you don't require to be a member of a club to register your boat.

I was helped out by Ronnie Windsor of Allsafe Maritime. He charges R100 for a new number (either an SR or a DTD number) and a further R450 for the survey to be undertaken. So that worked out to be the most economical way to do things for us.

Just an FYI for those looking to purchase new safety equipment, we got quotes from most of the shops in and around Durban. SkiPort was the best priced even before they gave an additional 10% off on their safety equipment (excl. flares & smoke signaller).
