DIY Rod Tubes
« on: April 22, 2014, 05:38:46 PM »
This is a DIY project that is easy and cheap to make and any one can do this.
The pics are also very easy to follow but if you do require any info or add to this please feel free.
Hope this helps all those who like me have had broken eyes and tips on our rods.

Measure the end caps so when the rods is in the tube it is protected by the foam ( the tip )

the outline marked with a pen

foam cut out and glue to the inside on the caps

foam glued in (I know I could of cut the foam a bit better).

Now measure the rod leaving about 20 to 30 mm on each side on the 50 mm pipe

Then cut using a hacksaw

Using 100 grit sandpaper fishing the edges off to a smooth finish

Apply the end cap

Then apply the other end cap with the screw in cap

For bigger rods I have used 110 mm pipe ( surf rods and boat rods)

The finished products

Very very nice Isi. Might I add that if one needs to add a carry strap, it can be riveted on to the side. This would make it easier to carry if walking distances

nice idea there Mike...I still want to try make one of those H-frames out of 40mm PVC pipe, with t's and elbows... :hnthnt: (don't know if it's been tried)much cheaper than the alluminium one, won't ever rust, might just be a little heavier... :dunno:

Good one Mike , looks good when its all finished , something i still have to do for my gazillion rods .. :creep:
, im planning to use the size up from 110mm , so that it can take about 6 of the shorter rods at one time , makes it easier to travel with as rod tubes can take up serious space when packing for a trip ... well all mine do ... :creep:   :creep:

Alternatively one could use 25 mm dia. electrical PVC conduit and fittings  :dunno:

Nice one Isi! Very lekka result...
I just question whether it's worthwhile going to all the trouble of spray painting it. I did it with mine and a year or 2 later, it looks like shyte...  duh

Here's the original DIY thread... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=5355.0

What my rod tube looked like when it was new...
I also rivetted a cloth handle on.

Yep the paint will come off but it gives you something to do in the winter months.  :hnthnt:  I would rather have a scratched rod tube then a broken eye on my rod.

You want to use Rust O Leum's Plastic paints/primer. They come in various colours and they don't come off, they are great in giving your plastic garden furniture a second life. These paints are available through Builders Warehouse. Go check their range out, there is some amazing paints on offer.
