Ok boys.

My fav rod was always an 8ft aerocast, but unfortunately I put too much pressure on a fish this weekend and it decided to
let go.

Now I need rod suggestion and even custom rod suggestions are welcome.

Loved the aerocast weight with with 5000 size reels and had enough pulling power. Think I hate was
the reel fastener that's build into the top rod grip. I kept on tightening and loosening the reel while fighting
a fish.

I need a new rod even if I have to have one made from a custom blank. Like the look of some of the terez rods but can't find them in SA.

Any suggestions ?

I've heard good reports about the Shimano Lesath... may be an option? Phone Basil Manning as the rod is not listed on their website.

Problem is I need an 8ft for the boat and I broke a lesath this weekend.

Story behing the broken lesath is I bought a stella 5000sw and an 8ft lesath ( was a 9ft that got broken) and a new 9/10ft lesath for R 4000 on gumtree.

I broke the 8ft lesath I got for free really this weekend and the seller warned me the rod took a few knocks and might not be 100% any more and don't want to use the 9/10ft lesath on the boat. Need an 8ft from where I can still grab the leader myself.

Have a look at the Assassin Ocean Spin have heard good things about it and at only R1000

The shimano Vengeance also seem like great blanks maybe just have the guides replaced.

1 - 3 oz max. Most of the time 2 oz.

I usually fish very light in estuaries. I bought a Shimano Trevala 7' for when there are larger kingies or some queen mackerel around in the deeper channels. A paddle-ski angler suggested it to me.

It throws plugs & lures very well (even lighter ones than 2oz), but has some serious backbone. It is meant to be a jigging rod, and the light-medium is suited to "jigs" 55 -90 grams. Your sort of region. A lot of boat angers and skiers swear by it.

I have never fished for yellowtail before, but the natal snoek anglers love it as it is seriously strong but also forgiving. I have lost smaller (under 1kg) fish on it as it was a bit stiff for them, but for 3kg+ it should be fine. I seriously doubt you'll break it, even pulling on a 30kg fish, but it may be a little too strong/stiff for your needs. Have a look anyway.

It's my go to rod when I was fishing off a kayak. Problem is that extra foot means I can get an extra 20-30m cating off the boat and that is very important when yellowtail fishing. They would sound when you get to close.

If they made the tevalla in 8ft I would buy 2. Best all round ever.

Aha.

Yep, there's a definite gap there in 8'

You and I are exactly in the same boat....

I am after something in the 9-10ft range and let's say a rod that can handle 10-25lb line. I want to use a 5000 on this rod. Why a setup like this? Well if I go for 25lb Braid I should be able to load plus minus 300m on that spool and that should enable me to land that odd "big" fish.

But why would I want something like this? Well when you Fly Fish you don't always get to the fish thats just hanging outside your casting ability, so that is where you bring in a rod like this. I am actually looking at building something like the Composite Developments Graphcast in a 9'.

I also have one or two other blanks in mind. I would like to use this rod to do light spinning, plugging and even throwing the odd dropshot. I had this concept in mind for quite some time now and who knows maybe this winter that concept might come to live.

Best

Try to get hold of an old Exage shimano theres an 8 model , horrible guides , but has proven them selves over and over agian , not as light weight the Lesast or Aerocasts ect . Between a hand full of guys I know , theres a bunch of them getting used .

I agree a 7 foot rod will not cut it on some days when spinning for them , those Trevellas are nice thought ...

Tail fishing my side , I actually sold most of the lighter stuff , you never know when that 25 kg plus Swine comes along .

ET , those Graphcast are nice .

Lenny they sure are but I do not like the sissy blue of the new models.  The older models used to be in that plum colour that showed black in the shade and once you take it into the sun it changed colour.  Those were as sweet on the eye as Cindy Crawford in her prime back in the day.

I scanned some blanks over the weekend as I have someone wanting a spinning rod to target 100cm GT's. I have looked at a whole range of blanks from 6ft-9ft that can handle anything from 15-80lb plus line and casting weight of 1-14oz.

What I do realise is that guys like casting stickbaits of 250g and heavier. But I do not think its necessary to go heavier than 30-60lb line rating for 100cm GT's. I also realise that if you step down on the line rating you also loose out on casting weight.

I am familiar with Calstar rods and they sure can handle big fish, but they are heavier and the blanks are thicker or has a bigger butt O.D than blanks thats coming from Japan. I have seen some insane blanks thats as thin as toothpics compared to the other stuff on the market.

I am open for something new. I would love to do a slimline Spinning/Jigging/ Popping Rod.

So if you guys have some suggestions, I would love to hear your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Bulkcarrier did you have a look at the 9' Berkley air extreme I have heard it can take a lot of abuse which is why I bought mine also serious backbone with a forgiving tip I havn't caught anything big on mine yet to testify. I believe there is even a new improved version out called the Berkley Venom. Not sure if they make it in 8' though.

Strangely I have one.  Problem I have with boat fishing with a surf rod is the bend isn't very nice for when the fish goes down or under the boat.

That's why I would love to get a jigging stick kind of action with the length of a surf casting rod. That why I am looking at custom.

Remember this is what I get from fishing with the rods. Don't really understand the physics of it just know the bend on these rods are different
and the jigging type action works better for me on a jigging type rod.

Have you looked at the Phenix blanks ?

I have two Phenix Trifecta Salmon blanks on their way for light spinning rods for Grunter. So I will be able to comment on those shortly.
There is a bunch of blanks from Mudhole that is worthwhile for what I have in mind and also for what you have in mind. Have you seen these blanks?

Black Hole....

Ocean Tackle International

I think that both these brands should serve you well.

I have seen the Graphcasts  in Aus , the really thin plum coloured  ones , the guys mention unbelievable specs . I was sceptic , but fished with them later and was super super chuffed with them .
I know for a fact another rod you could have a look at [ saw one at FS otherday]   is a Fenwick 9 XXH , this is a much Stockier stiffer rod , with more power thand the Vengeance / Air / Aerocast ect , rated 1 to 4 ounce. Forsure it will have more bully power to raise a YT .

Have you compared you distance with a jigging rod to your Spinning outfit when casting ? I think most boaters prefer a short rod , I know  do , and I get fairly the same distance with a "Lightish' Jigging stick , compared to a longer spinning outfit . and touch wood , no hooks is a fellow angles face ect .
A rod builder told me , that Purglass has a 9 foot XXXH blank ,apparently a very nice blank , does anyone know about them ?
Anyway keep us posted .

You aren't going to get that. For popping from a boat you don't want to go longer than 8'. If you go longer the only thing that will happen is that you might get more casting distance, but thats it.

You will pay in on the fighting and lifting power. You want to stop the fish and not have it break the rod. You want to turn it, longer rods will not work for you from the boat.

You need to look for a rod that has a strong butt but a softer tip in order to cast those plugs. You should look at something in the 80lb range and fish that with 50lb Braid on something like a Stella 10k.

For Jigging you want to go shorter. 6'6" is a good length, but you can go shorter.

Thats what I would consider. Have a look at that Jigging stick I did in the Complete Saltwater Kit, that's in fact the Calstar Grafighter Series. Those rods are available in 8' XXH or 8' XH. But I would go for the XXH.
