Double lines-The Aussie Plait
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:01:35 AM »
Hi all,

I have recently started using this knot instead of the bimini, it runs through the eyes a hell of a lot easier with no catchind and its very srong , mainly because you are not really knotting it at all. very good! I do mine around 350mm long.

I've tried this before (once) and it didn't come out too nice. But this video makes it look easier, and like everything I am sure it just takes practice! Such a pretty knot too.

Shot for the post Shag... must give it a bash - I love new knots!

But I can't see it being smoother through the guides than a Bimini done properly?

The original Bimini was designed to be done like Pic 1 attached... tight wraps. A compact and really smooth knot.
The South African way of doing it makes loose wraps as in the photo no. 2. A much longer knot and rougher through the guides. There's a knot video in the Knot section on how to do this, as well as a way of finishing the Bimini off that will never let it slip. Check it out.

Tony you are 100% My biminis are like the one in the top picture, perfect!! :hehe: :rck" I even go to the extent of flossing and varnishing the tag ends to get it smoother, however on 80lb mono I use 30 twists so the knot is a bit chunkier, I dont use the loose bimini at all. I still use biminis dont get me wrong this is just a very nice alternative especially on 80-130lb.

Ah ok...!  duh my bad.  Shewie 80lb mono will make a huge knot! So alternatives are good!

The Plaited Double has been used in Australia for many many years and has stood up well...though I must admit that I haven't gotten around to tying one myself...one of those things that "I'm gunna.." :lolo:

Greg

Thanks for that great video it really shows the technique well.

I have been using this knot for the past 6 months mainly for it's streamlined profile through roller guides and I am very happy with it. It is very strong and the line doesn't get twisted or chafed as sometimes happens when seating a Bimini. I use it from 30lb right up to 80lb and it is really easy to tie after a bit of practice. I leave the tag end +/- 5mm out of the knot and seal the end with clear nail varnish - haven't had one pop yet even on a few strong tuna. Very nice.

The plait is just on the double line, the wind-on loop is normally made with a splice. Hope understood your question correctly, things are a bit fuzzy this morning  :frid

Perfectly explained! I don't use a wind-on hence was thinking of 2 plaits etc.
