Put the Yoke Plate in like so... before screwing the side plate back on. It sounds like your Clutch lever is not engaging properly.

The ratchet
The Click pawl has a slight upward curve to it. If facing downward it won't engage. Make sure it's pointing up.

Bolt Engineering Distributors, ordering 2 x MR84 S/S bearings total R56. Size 4x8x3 you need 2 of them

I know this is an old post, but I got given an SL50 that's been used but was witting for quite a while.  I followed this tutorial and cleaned it up nicely and gave it grease as per the pictures and even managed to put it back together with no spare parts.  One question though, when I put the reel in free spool and turn the handle, it turns the spool although it turns it quite slowly.  Is it normal for this to happen even when the spool is in free spool or did I do something wrong with seating the plate under the yoke?

Don't think it's a problem Jared. When you disengage the clutch lever, the Pinion gear is lifted by the Yoke plate so that it disengages the Drive Gear. With the grease and stuff in place, there is probably still a dash of friction/contact between the gears. As it wears away, it will probably stop.

Thanks Reefs.   I figured it was something simple.  When I put it in free spool and spin the spool it spins freely, there's no sound of gears or anything so I'm sure it's not touching anything it should.  If it doesn't go away after a while I'll open up the right side plate and just double check, but it seems like the side plate will only go on if the clutch lever and the yoke plate match up so it shouldn't really be possible to mess it up?

Also remember when putting the Side plate back, make sure the Cast control knob is really loose, otherwise the spool spindle prevents proper closure of the side plate and seating. Even 0.5mm out and it will affect the reel. So loosen the Cast control knob, or even take it off completely, then put the spool in, and close up the side plate. It will go on a lot easier. Only then put the Cast control knob back.

I had a look at my reel this afternoon.  If I position the yoke plate under the yoke, it lifts the pinion gear up, but not all the way off the main gear, part of the pinion still touches the main gear.  I don't see how it can possibly lift it high enough to make the main gear sit between the groove in the pinion?

EDIT:  Ok this was my own silliness at work.  I got over excited with the grease brush and got grease on the spool shaft and inside the pinion.  This was making the whole thing sticky.  I cleaned that up and it's much much better now...

Reefman

i recently pulled my 50 apart in a maintenace run and noticed the bearing had fused to the spools shaft

i managed to blow the bearing apart - but not sure if i left a piece attached to shaft

Question- do you have a picture of the spool showing the shaft to ascertain if i haven't got all of the bearing off

Thanks

Steve

So here's a pic of the SL30 spool shaft, I'm pretty sure it's similar to the 50 design. Click on the pic to enlarge it.
