I’ve spent the last month helping to get everything ready for the Ocean Active stand at the Dubai boat show next month so it’s been a pretty busy time talking to suppliers making sure shipments are on time and some late night meetings with Nick and Jon. So when Werner asked if I could take him fishing in the Musandam I jumped at the chance to get away from Dubai for a day on the water, it’s certainly helped me appreciate how clients must feel when they get a chance to sneak away from work to relax and have some fun with Ocean Active.
Werner, Paul and Sebastian arrived at GT house to a fire in the pit and some cold beverages in the fridge the guys had fished with us in the past so it was like a meeting of old friends it wasn’t long and we had a barbeque on the go and a serious game of darts underway as we discussed our strategy for the following day.
We grabbed an early start the next morning, after a quick coffee to clear the cobwebs we departed from the marina just before daybreak, the sea was beautiful and flat with just a light breeze rippling the water surface and the sun beginning to peek over the horizon as we cruised up to the Musandam aboard Al Sayyad 1
As we reached the Lions Jaw I could tell that we had arrived with at the tail end of a falling tide, the ebb tide is my favourite time to drop jigs in the Musandam so we proceed to do just that. It wasn’t long and we were rewarded with a triple hook up on 3 small GT’s one of which was taxed by kingfish while we sorted out a tangle in the lines.

2.5 GT’s!

The action continued the GT’s were on the small side but the only one of the three guys on the boat who had done any jigging before was Werner so it gave the guys an opportunity to practise for the big one! We had landed about 10 small GT’s and two Spanish Mackerel and been smoked twice by this stage and there were a few tired chaps on the boat with Paul saying he was scared to drop his jig again but a quick pep talk soon had everyone motivated.
On the next drop Werner went tight with a good fish and Paul soon followed suit it was immediately obvious that they were better fish and with both guys getting properly bent we upped lines to concentrate on boating them. The Saragosa’s were singing and the rods were buckled as the guys started doing laps of the boat while ducking over and under one another in an effort to keep their lines apart in a great display of co-ordinated chaos. Paul had his fish on the deck first and Werner wasn’t far behind we snapped pictures of each fish as we landed them and released them safely.

With the tally up to 12 gt’s and two kingfish we decided to try see if we could find some topwater action but we were distracted by a school of monster long tail tuna busting in the jaw the fish fever spiked through the roof as guys starting flicking spoons on the light tackle, we had some near misses and hooked up briefly twice but nothing stuck which is probably a good thing as we would probably still be fighting the fish now as some of them where well over 30 kilo’s. When the tuna school had passed us by I glanced at the finder and saw some very interesting action at 40 meters whatever the tuna had been chasing where beneath the boat so it was jigs away again everyone went tight Paul and Sebastion on smaller fish that were soon boated and Werner again stuck into some larger. By this stage the current had picked up and Werner had a proper battle on his hands trying to muscle another big GT up to the boat. Some serious huffing and puffing later we had our best GT for the day and Werner’s PB Musandam fish on the boat for photo’s and a quick release

Werners PB and new favourite Jig the Hot’s Keitan which was the hottest jig on the boat that day

Kegger!
As we headed back to the spot a Sailfish began free jumping about 70m away in the current line it was our chance for a Musandam slam and we gave it our best shot but the fickle fish was nowhere to be found. Our day had just about drawn to a close and after one more GT we decided to head home final tally for the day was 16.5 GT’s and 2 king fish with 3 Geets over 30 kilo’s not a bad days work.

Happy anglers catching some zzz on the way home
