My son's in Australia, asked him to try & source Carbontex washers & get prices.

Long story short,a supplier there apparently said there's 3 thickness sizes available,1mm;0.75mm;0.5mm.

Think it should be 0.5mm,but just need confirmation.

It's for Tor14 & Saltist 30H(x2).

Anyone know?

Mucho Grachias to all,for all the help and support here, much appreciated.

Long story short,I took a 30H in for a simple cosmetic thing to a prominent reel repairer, about 3 years ago,and what should have been a R60 job turned into near R400.I also had to drop it off, collect it a week later and dropoff is approx 35km each way.Petrol and time put in.

Anyway, what I wanted done wasn't even done cosmetically, and an old Penn 180 or 500 part was put onto reel, say no more.

I haven't used the reel in 3 yrs as the torque and power were lost.I paid,Totally disillusioned,I left there perplexed but with other anglers there,I decided to rather be discreet and phone him

I was charged for bearings, service, etc, where I had explicitly told him to call me if there's other costs.I service my own reels as it is.I did phone him,he said I could bring it back for handle, but thought rather not.Once bitten....say no more

So,I've moved on to next chapter, and from there, just decided my kids(my reels) are safer in my hands, and will do my own reels from now on.

Old Salt was still working at the time, otherwise it would've been safer in Jono's hands.

After hours this week,I've serviced 3 or 4 multipliers, removed brakes and lubed parts of a Penn reel, and beefed up a good rod by trimming it down by14cm,so it can throw a 5 to 6oz sinker, etc. So,one can do a lot yourself without relying on others.

I haven't fished for some years,so drag washers also feel worse for wear. So,decided as I've gone this far,why not source the Carbontex material.

I'm looking internationally, and with Son in Aus also doing some Carbontex surveillance,as he's also in need of Carbontex, just thought let's see where it leads to.

I'm an Engineering Designer Draughtsman by trade, having compiled Work Packages for Naval Ship Warfare, etc,so lets see what drag washers entail.About 4 years ago,I received the wrong Carbontex washers, after waiting for 6 months.

Asked for washers for a 30,and received 40's which were too big. So,didn't wish to wait another 6 months,I trimmed washers down and cut them iaw old washers, worked like a charm..So,can't see a problem making my own washers if I can source it.

If anything, should be cheaper as I do need 3 to 4 reels done, which would cost a grand and more.

I'm kind of excited at the prospect.Hope it works, though?

And with Reefman's GREAT Tuts to help me,as they have with servicing my reels, this is a good place to be for that.

Thanks again

Walt, I have ordered many times from SmoothDrag and have only had great service. You can also order per reel, ie: washers for a Saltist 30H. You don't need to know the sizes. They also supply Cal's grease in nice big tubs, ReelX lube, Abec 5 and Stainless bearings for any reel on the market. Well worth the visit at smoothdrag.com

PS: When ordering parts for the Saltist 30H... make sure it's not the Saltist 30TH, which is a different size reel. The Saltist 40H, 50H washers are the same size as the 30TH, but much bigger than those for the 30H

Jeepers , hows this for a HI JACK !

Wessel Bosch , showed  me to put in leather washers in 2000 in Jeffries . Got a couple of reels thats on leather . strange thing is , I get more pulls on the leather reels , than on the Carbontex so I cant really compare , but who cares , as long as theres line going off the reel steadily , and coming back up onto the reel steadily  , I would use Kelp too or Newspaper .
This is an very old debate Leather VS Carbontex , I once met a Mamaparra in George that were seriously upset when i told him I have been fishing leather , turns out  he has a lil Carbontex selling opperation and just knocks leather to make bucks , what sad case !
Sorry for the Hi JAck

Hey,I'm going to Hijack my own thread here, lol!

Regarding Leather washers, this happened an hour ago!Coincidence?Maybe,Baby!

Anyways,I declared my Garage to be in a 'State of Emergency' today.Wife wanted to braai,'OK, just got something to clear in garage',like 2 hours ago.

My son had his house dropped off and mixed his contents with mine, prior to leaving for Aus.

We're still mentally and physically damaged, hence garage sufferring the most.

So,angling stuff takes priority, all goes in cupboard I have, and what do I come across?

Lil Plastic bag with another 2 plastic bags within it.

So,I read it as I normally package stuff, label it for future use at times,so I know what the contents are.

Read the note I left myself, lol, and its a set of leather washers that originally came out my Grandwave 30.

So,I'm going to stick em in reel I got problem with drag with,as there was nothing wrong with them.

Just not sure if it needs oil on the washers though?

Thanks S!Problem I have is that my garage yielded many things, but no sign of Copper Slip, lol.

Obviously haven't finetuned the logistics of my garage as yet.I found so many other things.

So,where would I source some Copper Slip?

Thanks!

You can get it from Midas. Used it on my reels and never had any problems.
